depends on what i'm doing. bbq is when we fire up the grill. cookout is normally when we have people over and cook out and make a day/night of it....
usually.

If we are cooking, we usually say "grill out". If we're going to a party or something... either BBQ or cookout is fine.

I've never heard one person say the word "cookout" around me in my life. It's always BBQ. I think it's a location thing. People on the
west coast say BBQ, and people in the midwest and the south differentiate between the two. Don't know what the east coast says...

When I'm home in CA everyone says BBQ, but when I'm at school in NC people say cookout.

we say neither, we say grill "we're going to grill this weekend" "come on over we're grilling" lol when this happened i don't

Cookout = gathering with friends and/or family grilling meat(hot dogs, chicken, fish) outside on the grill
