I raised an eyebrow when I read that among the music she was nailed for was Green Day. Green Day themselves have no problem with people downloading their
music for free online. They've said in the past that the reason record companies are making less money is because artists are making crappy music that the
public doesn't want to buy--not because people are downloading.

Artists who are in it for the music don't care if their records sold for $30+ in a store or for $5. Furthermore CD sales profits pale in comparison to what artists make off of tours, merch, and being a spokesperson for whatever and all the other shit that artists now do on the side to up their income. Also IMO a good band, with good material won't need millions to make an album. |

This is why I don't have any file sharing programs on my computer. And why I delete files after I burn them. I now only d/l music from here, and
beemp3.com. But mainly just here.

doylefan2002 wrote:LMAO shut up. If you knew anything about the music industry as it is now you'd already know that artists dont make ANYTHING from actual albums. It all comes from touring and endorsements. And considering the fact that you pirate, this statement is really hypocritical. But the fact that you spend money on something you can get for free just makes you stupid. |

I wish they'd delete the posts in MC every now and then. Most of the links are expired anyway.

MeParley wrote: I totally agree with that. I have no problem buying albums, as long as they're good. The ridiculous part is stores like FYE still sell CD's for $20. I think the RIAA needs to look at the crap music they put out as the reason for poor record sales. And lets not forget how they price-gouged us throughout the 90's. I must of spent thousands of dollars on CD's that decade. |

RandomA1 wrote:Read some Lawrence Lessig, especially Free Culture. You can find the entire book on his website. http://free-culture.cc/ He mentions the library analogy several times. Libraries and archives are often in the middle of copyright struggles. With new technologies such as e-books, Kindles, mp3s, streaming video, etc, libraries pay careful attention to copyright law. Librarians are huge believers in allowing access to media for everyone... even though the publishing industry used to try to stop their books ending up in libraries when they first became prolific. We didn't always have a culture that believed in sharing books for free. And thanks to libraries now, companies like Google are under a lot of pressure to not make money off of items in the free domain. (Copyright and fair use was a major issues in almost all of my classes in library school.) |

So basically, the $1.92 mil is just a scare tactic and they are just "making an example" out of her. But they have (or ever had) any expectations
that she was able to pay that amount. I think someone said, $2000? RIAA is trying to seem like they are so great by "settling" for a smaller fine,
and at the same time, they are trying to "Hey! DON'T MESS WITH US! or you'll be sorry!"
