I was teaching seniors in high school....I was a good 6 years older than them and I don't have kids...but they expected me to raise their children. I was 24! My parents would have never allowed it...when they disciplined me they always followed through with it and these parents never did. I am shocked at how kids talk to teachers/adults and how disrepectful they are. I am not saying spanking is the answer but some type of discipline needs to be enforced and I totally agree with the person who said parents are not their children's friends.

I think that is what is wrong with kids now, no one is worried about making them do anything. I grew up with a fear of my mother, much love, but much fear also. I think kids are not scared of anything anymore, b/c everything could be 'child abuse' I think that is taking away a lot of the parental power. The parent is the boss, the kids only have rights not to be abused, to food, shelter and clothing. I remember my mom used to sign her chore lists "The Management". Because it was true..

Apparently the parent thought it was fitting in this situation to spank her child so that's really all that counts.

The promo for it is, "Jon and Kate have an announcement." It has Kate saying they've made decisions that will bring them both peace. Wonder if they're announcing the separation or if this is just a ploy.

My sister was never as bratty as I was so she never got spanked. It all depends on the kid and what works for them.

Just because a person chooses not to spank does not automatically equate to having disrespectful children. What leads to disrespectful children is no consistency with punishment. Time outs, if used correctly and not just as empty threats, can be an effective method of punishment. Plus, unlike spanking, it doesn't send a mixed message that its okay to hit out of frustration. Flame away . . .

Having a slight fear of your parents is good. I was raised on it and it definitely kept me from doing anything hugely wrong. Was I cowering in a corner? No. But I knew not to act up or embarrass my parents because never emerging from the house again except for school and having everything I loved yanked out of my room was a definite possibility. Your parents aren't your friends. I don't think a lot of parents or kids get that these days. My parents are now my best friends in the world and are my conscience in most situations. THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As a mother now, looking back at some of the shit my cousins got away with vs. what I could/couldn't do and how they were "friends" with my aunts?! It used to make me so angry at my mother b/c she seemed so strict. And now, as a mature and responsible mother of one, I'm thanking her all the time for not letting me get away with any and everything. I agree with the people that are pointing out that spanking isn't your only disciplinary action, but at the same time, if Sofia cuts up to the extreme, her ass gets whipped. PERIOD. Those spankings for the extremely bad behavior are the ones that stop her from doing some of the other things. She's 3, ridiculously intelligent and highly aware: she knows when certain actions are out of bounds. I don't do the negotiating shit, I don't repeat myself; I tell her one time and she knows it. But I also don't spank her in anger. She doesn't cut up in public (the death stare thing works for that), she does lose privileges, and she does stand in a military position for certain behaviors (visualize a T)...so there are other punishments prior to a spanking. Nine times out of ten, it doesn't get to a spanking point. But shit like playing with electrical outlets, dangerous materials, running in the street= immediate ass whipping. Period. If we ran out into the street, tried to jump off something high, or play with something that could kill us? Butt whooping, no question. Getting hit by a car is a lot less painful than a few smacks to the behind. You can tell a child and tell a child, but they will STILL do what they want. And if timeouts work for you, cool. The "stare" was effective for us in certain situations too (church, trips to the boring DMV). But when it came to "Buy me that candy bar or I will embarrass you in this store mommy" type of thing I see kids get away with these days, my mother didn't play that. No way was a child she gave birth to was going to order her around. And some parents look down on those who spank their kids, yet they send theirs to bed without dinner as punishment. Timeouts can seem like torture for a 2 year old but I don't understand how it could work for an 8 year old acting a fool in the store. Where will he sit? In the produce section for ten minutes? What if the child acts out in public? A timeout on the sidewalk for a ten year old? That's break time. If a nine year old darts out into the street, disrespects an elder... It'll take one heck of a timeout to be sufficient punishment. Timeouts do not work with all children. They just don't work with all children of all ages. And spankings are not given out of anger.
