Nielsen draws line between ad spending, award nominations
Posted by Chris
at June 11, 2009
Research firm Nielsen has released a report showing that increased advertising spending by
movie studios has a direct correlation on not only the box-office success of those movies but also increases the odds they'll garner an awards nomination.
In looking at a number of the films nominated for Academy Awards, the report shows spending for The Curious Case of Benjamin Button reached, between August and December of 2008, something around $25 million dollars, dramatically more than any of the other films in the report. Not only did it get more, it started earlier, with the first spending occurring in August whereas the others didn't get ad support until November, closer to their releases. Among the movies released last summer that went on to receive Oscar nominations, Kung Fu Panda got the highest level of ad support, with almost $40 million in spending. The Dark Knight, by comparison, had just about $31 million in advertising help. But that's just, if I'm reading the report right, in direct spending by the studio and does not count other promotional deals. Most of that spending was, again, in the six to eight weeks prior to release. The only major spike in the chart that shows when ad dollars were spent on these movies comes from Wall-E, which had a big jump in early February when the studio ran a commercial during the Super Bowl. Essentially the report makes the case for studios to spend money on advertising their films, which I don't think was something that was in danger of not
happening any time soon. But it is interesting in that it shows some solid numbers and timing for that advertising for films that eventually went on to receive
Oscar nominations.
