I started my new job on Monday and found out on yesterday that I got a federal job (it's across the country, but I'll gladly move for an extra
$15k/year). The problem is, I want it NOW! But of course, there are delays whenever it comes to federal positions. It will apparently take somewhere between
4-5 months to clear me and get everything arranged so that I can start (6-9 months if there are issues with my background check that need to be cleared up,
which there shouldn't be *knock on wood*).

Wow, what branch in the government is this for? It didn't take nearly as long as 4-5 months for me to be cleared to work (and that's going through my
taxes, background check, fingerprints, etc)

Sorry for the bump, folks, but I was at work all day and then drove 3 hours to my parents house for the weekend.

I'll be doing the inspections of agriculture products, ships, and luggage for pests, prohibited species or potentially invasive species, people bringing in produce or other stuff across the border, etc.

Congrats on the new job! Do you already have the paperwork for your security clearance/background check? If not, I would suggest getting all the addresses
for where you've lived, worked and gone to school for the past 5-10 years and also the contact information for people (ideally not relatives) that knew you
at each address. Also, if you can afford it, I would get a copy of your credit report (because the govt will get one) and make sure there aren't any
outstanding problems you'll need to explain.

And if they ask about something they've found or about something you think might hinder getting your clearance, don't lie. They will be much more
likely to overlook a minor to medium problem if you tell the truth about it.

GinaJezebel wrote:Yeah, I got that on Wednesday and mailed it off today. That was the LONGEST paperwork I've ever had to fill out. I went through an entire ink cartridge getting it all printed out last night. It's been interesting, to say the least. The residence thing was hard. They only wanted a reference for any place that I've lived in the last 3 years. Luckily, that's only one address, but it is an apartment complex. I don't know my neighbors, and even if I did, they're pretty much constantly changing. I wound up just giving one of my old supervisors as a reference for it, since he's known me the entire time I've lived at that location. |

I mean, the worst that's on my record is that I've had two speeding tickets, got reported to collections once for a bill that I never knew about beforehand but paid once I did find out (I didn't know that ER doctors bill separately from the hospital - they managed to make a typo on the address and never took my insurance info from the hospital chart, so I never got the doctor's bill, even though the actual emergency room bill got to me - that was a NASTY surprise on my credit report), and I've got a little bit of debt from having a couple of surgeries in the past two years. Nothing outrageous. |
