Posts: 842 (06/09/2009 3:56 PM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Friend Block Invite Ignore	I'm thinking of starting courses at my local CC to become a nurse, so I have a couple questions: 1) Is it possible to take nursing courses and become RN while working full-time? How long does it take usually? 2) What is the stress level like for a nurse? What type of hours? 3) What is a good way to get my foot in the door to start working after education?

The nursing courses are VERY time consuming and even though you have most of your reqs out the way, you WILL be superbusy.

It's not a walk in the park like some gen ed courses are, I agree with purplelilac. Part-time is fine but just remember this is a commitment and takes a lot of studying time. And after you get ur RN lots of places are hiring so it's not hard getting a job at all.

It might get a few hours out of the way, but there's still a loooot to do. My advisors practically told everyone to quit their jobs. I had no job and nursing school was still hard. There are some people who work and go to school, but trust me, it will be rough. I think the stress level of a working nurse definitely depends on what area you go into. The hours, in my opinion, suck, but you deal with it.

I believe it depends on your school. I wouldn't recommend it. I lived at home, I didn't have a job, and school was still insanely challenging. Nursing school is a full-time job. 2. It depends on your personality. I'm pretty mellow, nothing really cracks me at work. However, I've been an RN for a year. It's taken some time to get to this point. I've developed boundaries. It also depends on the area of nursing you work in. Each has their stress but some more than others. I work 40hrs/wk...five 8 hour shifts. Most hospitals offer three 12 hour shifts. 3. Work as a CNA, volunteer, do a nurse externship while in school. If you get to know the people at the facilities, they are likely to hire you before you even graduate.

Posts: 8337 (06/09/2009 4:24 PM) Reply Quote More Recent Posts Message Friend Block Invite Ignore	I work full time and have a family and have maintained a 4.0 during nursing school. It depends on your study habits, how you handle stress and if you have a supportive family. My husband is amazing and very helpful with the children and keeping up the house. It's not impossible it just depends on how bad you want it. I am also starting an externship this summer. I am using my vacation time to do the orientation and then I only have to commit to 8 hours a week during the summer. An externship is an excellent way to get your foot in the door for potential jobs once you graduate. Good luck!

But they CONSTANTLY complain about it (which irks me). It's extremely stressful. Nursing school changes your whole life. It's part of the reason why me and my boyfriend of 6 years broke up. I started nursing school and didn't have that much time to hang out with him because I was either in class or holed up somewhere studying. Getting a job isn't that big of a deal. Nurses are wanted everywhere. But if you want extra experience I would suggest an internship or something like that during summers. Several of my classmates are doing them. Also you can work as a CNA. But getting a job is not a big deal in a hospital setting. If you want doctor's office or somewhere like that, it could be difficult.
