...did she use it in the correct way?
In the USA, does "ironic" have the same meaning?

Because I was watching a Jessica Biel interview and she said, "I'd never seen Guys and Dolls, which is ironic because it's so famous"
...did she use it in the correct way? |

People never use ironic in the right way. It usually is used in place of "what a coincidence" or "that's funny."
Thank Alanis Morisette. |

I hate when people use it in that fashion. Its absolutely and totally incorrect and I just think it shows a general ignorance of vocabulary and the English
language.

I thought it was wrong, too.
But I thought maybe it had a different meaning over there. |

In "A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius," he writes a whole thing about how people very rarely use it correctly. I like to read it every once
in a while when it drives me crazy.

Words that start with "i" are often confusing to people, I've found. Ironic, ignorant, the made-up word "irregardless"...

Yeah, she got that wrong. "It's like a freeeeee riiiddeee when you've already paid" If she has said "I'd never seen Guys and Dolls, which is ironic because I'm playing a role in it now" That could be considered irony because you'd assume that anyone in Guys and Dolls was probably a fan of it, but she couldn't of been a fan of it. |
