Harper's Brown Loves Making "A Fantastical Idea A Reality"Harper's Bazaar features and special projects director Laura Brown spoke with FishbowlNY contributor Diane Clehane for a "What Do You Do?" article on Mediabistro.com earlier this week. The Australian editor and special judge on Bravo's "Project Runway" spin-off "The Fashion Show" spoke about the challenges of her unique job including celebrity wrangling and conceptualizing the special features that get the magazine noticed, like last year's photo feature with Tyra Banks as Michelle Obama. On what celebrities are most influential today: "There was a time a couple of years ago when everybody was following Paris [Hilton], Nicole [Richie] and Britney [Spears]. That's passed a bit now. I think the women for our readers who we find compelling are the politicians -- the lens is more on them than it has been. I think a woman who manifests curiosity about being compelling and straddling all different worlds would be Angelina Jolie. She manages to compel all of us in various incarnations, whether you work at the United Nations or read Us Weekly. The actresses like Jennifer Anistonare never going to go away. 'When times are tough' -- it's a cliche -- but you want to read a bit of candy. You want to see a nice girl wearing a nice dress. We have enough news and swine flu to deal with. Also, women who live their lives well are important to us -- they have families and rewarding careers. One of the greatest examples of that is Sarah Jessica Parker. I think she lives her life with such integrity, and she's such a professional. She's a mom and she takes James Wilke to school every day and goes to Gourmet Garage [grocery store]. She's a Bazaar woman and another archetype that we like. A lot of these women are in the 30s and 40s. We like to think we can relate to them." |

Angelina Jolie Fights For Peace And Justice
Saturday, June 06, 2009, 5:45 AM (PDT)
.
Angelina Jolie is known for her beauty, her acting talent and her six children with fellow actor Brad Pitt. She was named the World's Most Powerful Celebrity by Forbes and the Word's Most Beautiful Woman by Vanity Fair. However, Angelina is also known for her dedicated philanthropic work. Angelina Jolie is co-chair of the Jolie-Pitt Foundation and a refugee advocate. This week she wrote an article for Time magazine, addressing the crisis in Darfur and pleading for action. The article was powerful and she starts if off by calling Friday "a defining moment in the history of justice." She continues, "The members of the United Nations Security Council will be presented with the results of the International Criminal Court's Darfur investigation - an investigation that they requested. Their response will determine whether there is going to be an international standard of justice that holds perpetrators accountable for the worst crimes in the world." At one point in the article, she talks about her own experiences, "I first went to Chad to visit refugees from Darfur in 2004. On that trip - more than five years ago - the refugees I met told me that the government was organizing the violence. About a year later, the international community came to the same conclusion. Some began to call the violence "mass atrocities." Others ramped up the rhetoric and called it "crimes against humanity." Nothing changed, so as the death toll mounted, activists pushed the Bush Administration to label it "genocide" - hoping somehow that term would arouse fear and horror." She ends the article with one short but meaningful sentence, "As they are considering Bashir's fate they are also considering their own." |

Movie studios like to operate in their comfort zones. Hey, who doesn't? So, Universal Pictures, which is betting on three high-profile comedies this summer, is going to focus heavily on comedies and "event" movies when putting together its release schedule for next year. Indeed, given the recent lackluster box office for such adult dramas as "State of Play" and "Frost/Nixon," it's not a big surprise that executives at the General Electric-owned studio reevaluated their plans and halted development of some acclaimed dramatic projects, as my colleague John Horn recently reported. On the franchise front, Langley said the studio is "deep in development" on sequels to "Bourne Identity," "Fast & Furious" and "Wanted," the stylized action picture starring Angelina Jolie that was a big hit last year. |

FRIDAY PM/SATURDAY AM: Some of the fun of summer box office reporting is that, every now and then, a sleeper comes out of nowhere and captures the No. 1 film crown during a weekend. "I guess there's no reason to do this if sometimes crazy things don't happen," marveled one rival studio exec last night. Because early domestic box office numbers from Friday show that Warner Bros' well reviewed Bachelor Party-gone-wrong comedy The Hangover opened for at least $17M from 3,269 theaters for probably close to a $50M weekend. That's without stars, too. Instead, credit a hot R-rated high concept (directed by Old School helmer Todd Phillips) and marketing plan. Earlier, box office analysts thought The Hangover would be neck and neck all weekend with holdover Pixar/Disney's CGI toon Up, because of this four-quadrant pic's usual Saturday crowded matinees for kiddies. With the great hold everyone expected from last week's No. 1 opening (-35%), Up was a strong No. 2 Friday with $14M from 3,818 plays and an expected weekend around $45M. Pixar's 10th straight smash, Up will post a $120M cume, so that's two success stories this weekend. Universal told me its expensive Land Of The Lost needed to debut with at least $30M for the studio not
to sweat. It's now officially one of the first turkeys of the summer. (Because aren't dinosaurs related to birds?) Land Of The Lost opened
Friday a distant 3rd with just $6.8M from 3,521 runs and a projected $20M weekend. That's unusually low for a Will Ferrell summer comedy, but this one
received dismal reviews. Still, how typically Hollywood that rival studios are taking obvious enjoyment in Universal's distress, especially on the heels of
Uni's recent underperforming thriller State Of Play and last week's disappointing grosses for Drag Me To Hell horror flick.

bdj wrote: Thanks for posting this.. I just think Will Ferrell is falling into that same trap that Jim Carey fell into.. Middle age men acting like little boys. Funny for a time, but then it get really old fast. As far as all the romantic comedies are concerned it just seems that the men are taking over that genre. Their movies are more successful then that of the women. So time will tell. I have said it before and I will say it again. I am so glad that Angelina did not take that "girl next door" route. too many of them in Hollywood. Brad too is keeping it fresh. Doing new things. I have loved all of his movies since Babel. Not a dud in the bunch. He is on such a roll.
