someone thinks I'm crazy that I want my children to read for fun. I intend to limit tv or video games or anything that will make them brain dead.
Forcing my future kids to read is not crazy

That's not crazy - that's good parenting!

I don't know how to explain it to them but reading helps develop their brain... their cognitive skills.
For me, I started to love reading only in high school and it definitely helped me in college because I end up reading a bunch of books that I actually enjoy. |

I read some where its better to encourage children to read at an early age and the earlier the better. |

I use to love reading when I was younger and we have gotten my 3 yr old nephew into books and he loves us reading to him.

Sometimes forcing kids to read has the exact opposite effect you're trying to achieve.

^I think that "forcing" is a bit much, but my daughter is 3 and I've always read to her. She enjoys that time with she and I and I catch her
"reading" to her dolls and doing that type of stuff. She's definitely found enjoyment in it and I just thing encouraging that is healthy. At the
same time, I limit TV time and programming anyway just on principle. She plays a lot in her kitchen and playhouse and I think that kind of "make
believe" play is important as well.

That's all nice and good, but don't be upset if they don't like to read

Me and my youngest sister love to read, always have. The other two...not so much.

Yeah, forcing may not be the right word/term/approach...
however, introducing them to books at a young age will definitely help them with many skills. We have been reading to my 2 year old since she was a few weeks old and thankfully she LOVES books right now. I hope her love continues, but we can't do more than introduce them, etc. Thinking your wrong for limiting other things to have them read is silly, but as someone else stated forcing can backfire. |

LisaChasez wrote:Ditto. I wouldn't use the word force for that very reason. I do plan to encourage my children to read, and if I read to them when they are young I think I can stimulate a love of learning -- but you can't really force it on them. |

Even if they don't love to read, you don't have to buy video games and premium cable. They'll find other, more constructive interests.

LisaChasez wrote:Yup, it's one of the mistakes I think I made. I made such a big deal about it that I think it backfired. I didn't really force, but I did make it this huge thing. My kid hates reading for pleasure...it's anything but pleasure to her. I figure it might change when she's out of school or whatnot, but I'm convinced I played a part in that. |

I think you should encourage it, not force it. Like not literally "you will sit here and read right now!"
But I don't know. I love to read so much and always have, and my mother encouraged it from as far back as I can remember. I don't know why some people don't like to read! |

My mother never forced me to read, but she loved it so there were always books around the house. I was bad at video games and we only had one TV that I never
had control of, so books were all I had.

Oh you're gonna be one of THOSE parents. Reading is great but the whole time limits for TV and whatnot is a little too much IMO.
To each his own though. I'm sure your kids will be great. |

That is not crazy. That is great!
I am hoping to try to teach my kid to read right before they start kindergarten. |

I watched a lot of tv and played a lot of video games as a kid, yet to see any evidence of being brain dead
Good luck forcing them, they'll just go in the opposite direction. |

Me and my brother love to read, I think it's because we've always had books around and watched our parents read. We probably copied that. I was never
forced and I watched plenty of TV.
