But isnt waiting in line included in the grocery shopping deal? If i never wanted to wait in line when things were busy, id be walking around the counter and bagging my own meal at McDonalds.
I will more often than not wait and let them bag my groceries. Take your time.
I don't understand how people refuse to bag their groceries

Honestly, if I were a cashier again I would just take my time. Who gives a shit if people complain about taking too long? Since when is there a wait time
guarantee? If there are a lot of people waiting to get checked out well then they are just out of luck. As long as the cashier is doing something (bagging or
ringing) and not just standing there twiddling their fingers what's the problem? If they complain about you being too slow, just explain that it was the
dumbass customer before them that was the hold up, not you.
I hate when customers try to rush me (even though I'm not a cashier). We get monitored by our wait times, and I'm sure I've gotten a lot of complaints about being too slow in the past. Even though I do try to get people in and out as efficiently as possible, I honestly don't care that much if I don't make my deadline as long as I don't end up making a mistake and killing someone. |

I've never been in a situation where bagging my own groceries was even an option.
I have used curbside pick up though a couple times but it was when my groceries, after being bagged, used up two carts. I pulled the car around and got it loaded. Both times involved a situation where I bought enough groceries for a party of 100 or people. I needed help. Wegmans doesn't let us tip the guys/girls who do it though. |

Oh man I forgot about that! We also would get logged on how quickly we scanned things. The list of the top 5 would go up in the break room.

I can't reach the empty bags at my local grocery store, but once the cashier has bagged them and pushed them to the end of the checkout area I load them in
the cart while he/she is continuing to ring up my stuff.
As far as letting them wheel your stuff out...I never do, but in an only remotely related story I had a Lowe's employee chase me down in the parking lot and fuss at me for not waiting for him come out and load my 10 bags of mulch into my car. I was all dude, who do you think loaded them onto the cart, and who do you think is unloading them out of the car when I get home? |

Jakki314 wrote: Actually, no I can't. Our time starts from when the first item is scanned until the receipt finishes printing or the drawer closes, whichever is last. And if I was to ask a customer to load their cart, they would turn right around and complain to a manager that I wasn't doing my job. |

WTF people, every grocery store is different, the one I always go to doesn't even let you do that, you'd have to walk around the counter, past the
baggers. Another case of "You know, NOT EVERYTHING IS THE SAME EVERYWHERE."

Where do you people work/shop? I've been asked to leave heavy items (i.e. cases of beer, turkeys, etc.) in the cart and not up on the belt, but I still
can't remember a time when I could even get to the loaded bags let alone put them in my own cart.

Their checkout stands are laid out like this: conveyor belt (6-8 feet long), scanning area (about a 1 foot wide x 1.5 feet deep; can't reach because it's behind a shelf where you write checks or use the pin pad to slide your card), bagging area (same as scanning area), big flat empty space where the loaded bags are pushed into and I can reach (approx 3 feet square).

I've never worked in a grocery store, but I do work retail. That said, when I go grocery shopping, I try really hard to be as patient as possible, cuz all
that getting riled up about standing there waiting will do is raise your blood pressure. The line doesn't move faster because you're in a rush.
That said, I've never been a fan of bagging my own groceries, but I shop at Genuardi's where the cashier's have a bagging area right behind them, and then at the end of the counter there's either a bag boy or me. If I have a shitload of items, I'll jump down to the end to try and speed up the process, but if it's just a few items, I'll let the cashier do it cuz she's got easiest and quickest access and she won't let it slide all the way down the counter. As for bag boys/girls, there's a constant offer when I'm picking up kitty litter or cases of water for help out to the car and I've never taken it. As Pliant said, who got the items into the cart and who is gonna be hauling them into my house? Me. So thanks for the offer, but I'll enjoy my mini arm "workout" and proceed with my day. |

I'm a cashier and I don't mind bagging the groceries but when its really busy it would be nice if people would load the groceries in their basket.
Also, a bit off topic but the thing i hate the most is when younger strong looking men put extremely heavy things like big TVs, furniture, etc. on the belt
after I ask them to leave it in their basket and then they refuse to help lift them while I struggle.
I'm little and I think its pretty obvious that it would be hard for me to
lift those items. I've had complaints filed on me for asking customers to help me lift things that they put on the belt.

I completely agree with the OP and others who think it's lazy/shitty to wait for someone else to bag your groceries when the store is CLEARLY busy and you
could feasibly do it yourself.
I also hate the following in grocery shopping experiences: -People who take a shopping cart when the store is busy and they only are buying, like, 5 items. Take a damn handbasket and leave the carts for those who have a lot of stuff! -People who leave said shopping carts at the line when finished unloading the contents onto the belt. Fucking push the cart out of the way so that the person behind you doesn't have to do it for you. Lazyass. -People who open and eat food they haven't paid for while shopping. Tacky as all hell to begin with, not to mention, you're stealing. You haven't paid for the item, it still belongs to the store, so why are you opening/eating it as if it's yours? -People who let their bratty kids run up and down the aisles. Not a daycare center, okay? |

Want to know the worst? When lazy middle aged bitches with NO health issues take the baggers up on their "would you like me to help you to your car"
service and then they immediately get into the car and sit comfortably in the air conditioning AS the baggers are loading up the trunk. That's so
ridiculous I can't even stand it.
The car thing should only be extended to the elderly! |

Courtney Love1 wrote: This pisses me off to no end. A few weeks ago I was in Walgreens and the front of the store is VERY small. It got very busy and there was only one cashier and the 3 seperate dumb fucking people ALL left their carts right there where they were when they were done checking out.
All 3 of these carts were literally blocking the fucking exit completely. I don't know how anyone can be so rude and ignorant. The clerk was very busy at the time, there were at least 5 other people in line behind me, so she couldn't really come out and fix it, so I nested all of the carts together and pushed them under the thing they belonged in, out of the way. People are IDIOTS. -People who open and eat food they haven't paid for while shopping. Tacky as all hell to begin with, not to mention, you're stealing. I don't really agree with this, as long as you pay for what you ate, I see no problem with snacking as you shop. JJB likes to call everything tacky.
