I am pretty sure Adam does it because that is who he is.

Maybe it's more exciting to some of you that the songs are sung straight up, but that was also actually one of the reasons why so many of the Idol winners
didn't do as well as everyone had hoped.
Kelly made it because after she did her requisite wannabe-Mariah-Whitney-and-whoever-Clive-wants record, she did her own thing. Carrie kept on trucking because she was so set on her genre from the very very beginning that they didn't meddle with it when she won. Same with Chris Daughtry, David Cook. These contestants are learning from that, which makes for a better artist afterward, but maybe a redundant one for some viewers. But I personally look forward to Kris singing every week because it's like waiting for an artist's CD that you really like to come out. You're familiar with their work, you like their style, so you're excited to see if you'll like what they're offering next. This is why I don't understand Adam. I think Adam has a great voice and great stage presence, but I really don't know what type of music he'll end up doing when he's out. I acknowledge he can sing, but his performances are touch and go for me, sometimes I'm completely amazed, and other times I'm just annoyed. However, he does everything with panache and I have to give him props. I don't understand why it stopped being a vocal competition because people are learning about the business. It's not like you have 10 Mariah Careys singing every week. You have a mishmash of people, and each of them has to figure out what will make them "Idols" in that you will want to buy a record and watch a concert that's not all covers, all the time. At the end of the day, in the real music business, your competition is with people who can sell an image and product of themselves that the public likes. And they might be less than stellar singers, but people LIKE them and their style and so they buy. That's what some of these people have begun to understand. |

I kind of agree with all of the opinions expressed in this thread but I just hate interchanging of the idea a contestant having great vocals and a contestant
demonstrating artistry. If the judges are tired of hearing the same songs every season they should recommend new theme weeks. I hate how they seem to be
putting all this unnecessary pressure because they don't want to hear the same song sung the
same way. If the producers are gonna make this an artistry competition raise the age and allow bands to audition.
I think changing a song's melody, key, rhythm, or style has it's place but I don't fault anyone for wanting to hear great vocals over a song's original arrangement either. I think it's unfair to penalize contestants just b/c they might not play with an arrangement or change the song's style. |

I love when they put their own spin on shit. Sometimes it fails but it's INTERESTING. I don't think anyone's really trying to be who they
aren't, it's just that the bar has been raised and now everyone's gotta keep up.

I love that they put their own spin on these horrid themes. It gives me an idea of what kind of artist they are and if I will buy their album. Singing straight
up disco doesn't tell me anything.
