My boyfriend finally decided to quit yesterday and he's struggling so hard. He woke up sweating, his heart was racing and he was so nauseous this morning.
I don't know what to say besides "hang in there, it'll get better!" but I think he may give in sooner than later. Any advice?

I did, but didn't have any withdrawals for after affects. But it helps to have an obsessive-compulsive personality.

Hang in there, it will get better
I wish I could say more. I know how hard it is. |

My husband did. I had things like carrot, celery and green pepper sticks availible for him at all times. That way he had something to munch on that didn't
make him gain 30 pounds!

I have no idea what he's going through, only that it's not pretty. He brought 1 cigarette to work this morning, despite my eye-roll. I guess I'll
stick to the encouraging words!

If he's having such problems he should get the patch or use gum.

Depends how strong his will is. If he has the guts to last about a week of those withdrawals, it'll get much better after that. It sounds like he must have
been a very heavy smoker. If he gives in, he should reduce his daily amount to about 3 cigarettes and then quit completely.
Thinking you're not smoking at all and then have an odd cigarette here and there has not worked for anyone I know. I used to smoke 40 per day for many years but over time got down to like 5 a day and then stopped completely when I thought I was pregnant. Turned out I wasn;t, but I never started again. Oh and my bf doesn;t smoke, that helps. |

Oh, I almost forgot --- he should try drinking a lot of water. Staying nice and hydrated can help your body flush away the toxins faster and help with the
withdrawal time.

I've done it cold turkey. The first week was surprisingly ok. The second week was when I started having major cravings. I was so irritable and moody. I can
clearly remember sitting down one day with a cup of coffee in my hand, and suddenly, all I wanted was a cigarette
It wasn't until week four that I started to feel normal again. Hang in there! |

My mom did like 14 years ago. I just remember her sucking on a LOT of lollipops all the time everywhere she went

I did! I will be a year smoke free on Monday! No patches, gum or meds.
The key for me was to drink tons of water, get loads of sleep (I was sleeping 9 or 10 hours a night during the first 2 weeks) and to indulge a little in other things. I would reward myself with Ben & Jerrys yogurt every night for while there. I lost about 20 lbs or so after quitting so the extra 5 I put on in the beginning was easily lost once I was able to breathe better and exercise more. Yoga and meditation worked wonders for me too. And I made sure to let everyone in my life know that I was quitting and I even apologized in advance because I knew I was going to bite their poor heads off without really meaning to. Tell him to hang in there and be really supportive. A reward BJ wouldn't hurt either.

My boyfriend has tried everything. He said once the prices went up he'd quit for sure but now that they did, he's just buying the cheap gross kind.
He did hypnosis, the patch, the gum, cold turkey, quitting with all of his coworkers for support, quitting with his mom who has lung problems, gradually
smoking less every day... nothing works doorear wrote: Totally didn't work either! I told him he could have one EVERY SMOKE-FREE DAY!!! He lasted 1 day.

I finally succeeded 2.5 years ago, after starting the attempt in 2001.
Nicotine is supposed to be totally be gone from the system after 48 to 72 hours of completely stopping. Drinking water when the urge to smoke rises helps curb the need; and exercise will also distract one from the urge. Good luck to you and your boyfriend. Your patience is most needed, the withdrawal might make him temperamental.

My boyfriend and I quit the day I found out I was pregnant, maybe that will help you...jk.
It helps with a less stressful environment and encouragement! |

I think he likes smoking too much to have enough will power.
