I was flicking through channels the other day and didn't even recognize GL with how cheaply it's shot now... I thought CBS had some after school special on initially.
CBS may cancel 'Guiding Light'

SoapNet's uptick in popularity has helped the ABC lineup's bottom line (unfortunately, given the quality).

That would suck, because i started watching again in October of last year, and the stories have gotten better. i'm especially in love with the OTALIA
story. They are telling this story so much better than All My Children did.
My OTALIA would go bye bye if they cancelled.

Soap opera digest is reporting that the cast & Crew were notified that GL is cancelled. Not sure if it is an aprils fools day joke or not...

It's official. Just saw this on ONTD:
72 year-old Soap Fades To Black
CBS has cancelled "Guiding Light"--which has aired, in one medium or another, for 72 years. The veteran soap's last episode will air Friday, Sept. 18. The cancellation of "Guiding Light" is yet another nail in the coffin of daytime soaps--many of which have fallen by the wayside due to declining ratings. It's not known what will replace "Guiding Light" on CBS' daytime schedule. The show airs from 10 to 11 a.m. on Ch. 2. The cancellation isn't a total shock; rumors of "GL's" imminent demise have abounded the past few days. CBS renewed the show in March 2008--when it was on the verge of cancellation--after a drastic change in the show's format gave it a hip, reality-show feel and ratings remained steady. "No show in daytime or primetime, or anytime, has touched so many millions of viewers across so many years," said CBS daytime exec Barbara Bloom. "We thank the cast, crew and producers--past and present--who delivered this entertainment institution..." "Guiding Light" began life in 1937 as a 15-minute radio serial, before switching to a 15-minute soap on CBS in 1952 (while continuing to air on radio until 1956). The series moved to a 30-minute format in 1968 and expanded to an hour in 1977. |

Gigi's sister just appeared a month ago and already she's wreaking major havoc and is in nearly every scene. And Natalie and Jared managed to figure out Chloe is Star's baby in one afternoon, even though over a 4- or 5-month period last year they weren't able to tell Jessica was really Tess. |

Alex the Goob wrote:Y&R will probably be the last soap standing. Seriously, I don't know how they do it. Their ratings are pretty frickin' good compared to the other soaps. It used to be at 4.0 for awhile and just recently dropped to 3.5. Last time the other shows consistently pulled 3.5 in the ratings? 2005. Soaps are a dying genre and I just hope this doesn't cause a chain of other shows being canceled (though I can see how it would be an easier decision for CBS since they still have 3 other soaps to lend back on). Maybe TPTB should use this example as a warning and actually listen to what the fans want to see with their shows, rather than firing people who have been on for years and bringing in new characters that no one cares about? |

I'm willing to bet that AMC sticks around for a while too, for some reason.
