She told me that one of my kid's parents had come in and told her that when she went to pick her kid up one day, I had him sitting in a chair facing a wall as punishment. First of all, timeout is against policy in my daycare. I think it's BS, but it's policy, they're paying me, if I don't like it there's the door. So like, why the hell would I even do that? It was an absolute lie, with no truth to it whatsoever. I don't get wtf this woman would have against me, trying to get me in trouble like that.

This parent claims she walked in and SAW this. I mean, I would understand if the claim was that the kid had gone home and said, "Miss Sammi made me face a wall today." Kids make up shit, so I'd understand that. But for the parents to swear she saw this? WTF? Um, see punishment is a swear word. We "positively reinforce" because as you know, that wards of all undesirable behavior. I take privileges away from them, though. As in, if a kid is misbehaving in art, they've lost access to that center and I usually send them to books, because it calms them down. If a kid throws mulch on the playground, they've lost the privilege to play while we're outside, etc. It works but timeout is easier.

Parents are quick to judge sometimes, without talking to the caregiver. Sorry it happened to you. I always talk to the teacher in my son's room to find out what's going on before going to the director. That's just wussy.

There have been times when he's been playing alone, and she has come in and been like "What? Is he in trouble?" Um no...your kid just doesn't need to play with others every second of his day. That's a good thing. So maybe. But I don't recall him ever even facing the wall for any period of time. I'm thinking I would have found that odd and asked him what in the world he was doing. But yeah I also don't get why she wouldn't confront me first if she thought something had happened. It's probably because nothing had happened in the first place and she obviously has an unfounded issue with me. The thing is, there would be nothing on the video to actually see! They'd be going through weeks of tape going "......and WHEN was this supposed Time Out o' Doom?"

I hated being at work and getting a call from my boss saying that someone had complained about something (pretty much always something petty and stupid and/or not my fault) because then it would become a huge issue when it was really nothing at all. If a parent has a problem or a question they should go to you first and if nothing is done about it or they aren't satisfied then they should take it to the director. I always felt like parents were purposely trying to screw with my job when they would smile and act like everything was fine to me then go bitch about me (or my staff who worked under me) to my boss.

I have to talk to him more than other kid for the most part. She has to know that he is difficult and that even if he was in timeout at any time, it was most likely for a good reason. I don't remember what day because it wasn't mentioned. I do know that there was one time she came in and he was sitting in the designated "Safe Place" of the room quietly, because I had told him to sit down and just chill for a little. He was overstimulated and out of control, and sometimes he and other kids just need time to chill and focus on their breathing, which is a technique we teach them. But that was not at all a timeout--it's what we have been trained to do to help kids calm down. He was just chilling and happily so, but apparently that offended the mother as well?

In our family, a timeout was 1 minute for every year of age. So if they were 3 years old, they would get 3 minutes. It was basically a time for them to calm down and reflect a bit on what they did. Once the time was up, we'd discuss it briefly then move past it.

One time this child had spilled milk all over his shirt and also in the main walkway in his classroom at the end of lunch time. I told him to stay where he was at and I went and wiped the mess away before any kid could slip and fall. Well, his father was walking in and saw him sitting there with milk all over his shirt and immediately reported me to the director. The director came in the class and instead of siding with me on deciding to wipe the spill first, she agreed that I should have stopped everything and changed the child's clothes before anything else. What the hell kind of logic was that? There are kids running around trying to get ready for recess and they could have slipped and fell. Needless to say, I put in my 2 weeks shortly after that.

Back in the preschool days, if a teacher so much as looked at me funny at pick-up time I would say, "What did he do???"

One child went home with a bruise and he told his mom that I gave it to him. His mom of course told the director (which I would too if I was that parent!) and we had a meeting. 2 days later said child admitted to his mom that I didn't do it. It is very stressful but it will pass and the parent will learn to ask questions before jumping to conclusions.
