Saw my PCP today, and he made a psych referral for me. Also prescribed a 1mg/2x a day lorazepam regimen for two fifteen days. I took my first one just
now...wow, didn't realize the sedative properties would be THAT strong.

I'm on Lamictal and Lorazepam but only 1 mg at night to sleep. It's sort of odd that you were only prescribed Ativan if you were diagnosed with Bipolar
Disorder. They need to get you on some mood stabilizers. Unless your PCP didn't feel comfortable doing that and he's leaving it up to your
psychiatrist. Either way, see one ASAP. Bipolar Disorder is not something to mess around with and leave untreated.

Lorazepam is just for two weeks, temporary thing. PCP really wants me to see a psych. Should I?

my cousin got diagnosed with bipolar and a few other things about 2 years ago and has refused medication thinking that she's fine and it's everyone
else with a problem.
For your family's sake go see a pscyh. |

WHAT to expect.
my moms gonna be home in two hours or so. im waiting for her right now and watching dvds to keep myself calm. she said shes gonna take me to the hospital soon. has anyone else experienced anything like this before? i really need...well, not advice necessarily, just stories and good thoughts. my minds racing at a mile a minute right now. im trying to stay calm, but not even that 1 mg lorazepam i took seems to be helping. please, someone, i just want some stories/anecdotes in terms of success. i just want to know im gonna be okay, because right now it feels like everythings falling apart...everything ive worked so hard to create: the image of a perfect child, the acceptance into my bsn registered nursing program...i dont wanna lose it. PLEASE someone help. |

Why exactly are you so on edge right now? Is there a particular reason or does this just happen at times?

Give her a few more minutes.
I'm in nursing school and I'm in the mental health class right now. We're on an in-pt psych unit. It's amazing, to read the charts of some of the patients and see how bad things were for them and then a few days later after hospilitization and being on a med routine, their outlook and insight has improved so much. |

that sounds so cool. i havent done psych yet - thats 4th semester for me. im in my 2nd semseter and were on a med-surg floor atm.
umm Ohman, i dunno. i think my pcp triggered it honestly. ever since he diagnosed be as bipolar, ive been on edge and hyperaware of my anxiety it feels like. and just now (well, today-but a few hours ago) i hit one of my worst lows. i mean, i dont think its something ive experienced before, definitely not...maybe in high school... and yeah, you just feel really shitty. *I* feel really shitty right now, but i know but i know its the disorder and not me. im just having trouble distinguishing between the two right now. Edit: also, thank you for the responses. i know it seems attention-whorey, but really, i just want someone who's in the know to offer advice and suggestions while i wait. i cant seem to sit still |

Yeah, I kind of thought it was just the fact that you know what it is now is making you more aware of it. Try to think back to other times when you felt bad
and the fact that you made it through that, and you will make it through this and feel better. Once you DO get to see a psychiatrist and get on a regular
regimen, you will be so much better, so at least be glad that you know what you have to do.

I think you need to see a psychiatrist to get a more in-depth diagnosis, just in case your PCP is diagnosing you with bi-polar disorder and you really have
serve depression. I battled clinically severe depression for about 4 years. Once I started seeing a psychologist and taking the proper medication, my life
turned around drastically. I felt like a person who had been in a coma for 4 years. It WILL turn around if you make an effort to take care of yourself. Also,
reach out to your friends and family. They will not think you are crazy; they will be there for you. Only one person knew how bad I was, and that person had to
drive an hour to my place more than once because I was afraid I was going to harm myself. Now I wouldn't think of such a thing and I want to do everything
I possibly can with my life. You haven't done anything to deserve this or to cause it; right now your brain just isn't producing chemicals in the
"normal" way it should to function correctly. Medication to straighten out your biology and therapy to help you mentally will do you a world of good.
Hang in there and if you ever need an ear, I'll be happy to listen!

I take lamictal and it really helps with the agitation and racing thoughts. It's awful when you feel like that, it's like everything is collapsing
around you. I found that doing something I really liked (like going to see a movie or eating chocolate) helped take the edge off of it. If you see a
psychiatrist they can help a lot. Medication was really a godsend for me. I feel like a normal person now. Hang in there!

desertwonder--I'm sorry that I don't have any stories to give you, but I just wanted to tell you that I admire you for going to the doctor to address
your problem. So many people feel like shit but don't do what they can to fix it!
Just think of it this way...you've already begun the process of treating your problem and that's a great thing. It means that you're on your way to feeling so much better! I wish you all the best. |

OP- i'm a psychologist.....definitely go see the psychiatrist for the referral. they will be able to prescribe you meds based on your symptoms more
appropriately than your PCP.....

I don't know, I'd be wary of a PCP making a psychiatric dx.

Lorazapam (ativan) is for anxiety. Depending on your diagnosis and what you're dealing with, it may or may not help.
The lorazapam will make you sedated and probably a little woozy. Make sure to only take what the doc has told you to take, not more. For 2x a day, try to make it as close to once every 12 hrs. To get a more in-depth analysis of what is going on and your diagnosis, you should go see a psychiatrist. Especially if you feel like you have bi-polar (not sure, just what I was reading in your post). PCPs are okay to deal with psych meds once you are stabilized and have been on them for some time. A psychiatrist will be able to work with you and know more about how the meds are going to interact with you. Ask your PCP if they have any referrals to any good psychiatrists in the area. Or if you feel comfortable, ask a friend and see if they know any. You'd be surprised at how many people go to one.
I don't think you need to go to the hospital....just try to relax. I personally think the PCP should have put you on 0.5 mg to start. Btw, I work at a psych crisis center, so this isn't just something I came up with. |

Your body will adjust to the ativan. The first few days you will feel really tired and kinda out of it, but that will slowly disappear. It is important that
you only take it as prescribed, b/c all anti-anxiety meds can become addictive. Just take some deep breaths, and try to relax. Maybe take a bath or a nap?
And yeah, def go to a psychiatrist. There's nothing wrong with going, and he/she can give you a much more accurate diagnosis than a PCP. |

your advice and support.
