I am aint amemo... The afp test that can tell spinal bifia is 16 to 19 weeks. I drank two sodas a day because it was better then the shock from no caffine.
I told people around 3 months... Did any of that help? |

First off congrats to your brother if she is pregnant.
They can do tests but if I can ask a question what side of the family has SB??? My son was born with it, and is fine, BTW, and when we did genetic testing, they did state that it is usually the mother is the carrier of the gene, and she passes it on is what I know about it. They told my son that he had a less than 10% chance of passing it on as he is a male. I don't know how that could be, but that is my experience with it. So definately she should get tested as soon as she can. She needs to take Folic Acid for sure. Hope everything works out ok |

they do the the testing around 14-17 wks
with 10-12 wks being earlier & higher risk of miscarriage. i wish you guys the best of luck but she def needs to go to a genetics specialist and see what they have to say & def start takin prenatal vits asap |

Both my husband and my daughter have SB. You hear a lot of scary things about it, but there are alot of variations to it. For example, my husband didn't
find out he had it until he was 26 years old because he never had any problems with it. My daughter on the other hand, we knew as soon as she was born.
I didn't tell anyone I was pregnant until I was past the first trimester. Please urge your SIL to start prenatal visits as soon as possible. |

We told people at 3 months after hearing the heartbeat and seeing him squirm around at the first ultrasound.
I'd given up caffine a few months prior so nope, no caffine all nine months. I still haven't had caffine in almost 2 years now. |

You can drink 1 can of caffeinated soda a day.
We told people right away. If it happens again I think we will wait a bit longer. You should tell anyone before 3 months. I tested positive for spina bifida. We got a level 2 ultrasound and everything turned out okay. It was around 4 months that I did the testing and the ultrasound was a couple weeks later. That's when we found out we were having a boy. |

I told people after my first doctors visit just to make sure it wasn't a false home test and make sure everything was ok. I never had the amnio tests done
with either of my pregnancies. I guess they do it if your at risk? Anyway, as for caffeine, I drank 1 iced coffee a day. I couldn't drink my regular coffee
because it made me sick then. And I used to only drink diet soda, but that made me sick too so I drank regular soda, usually pepsi, throughout the entire
thing. Except when I was really sick and then I could only drink sierra mist and sprite. But my children came out just fine. At the end they said I had
hypertension. Might have been caffeine related. It forced them to do an emergency csection with my daughter so if they say your blood pressure is starting to
rise you might want to slack off on the caffeine. It really depends on the person. Both of my children are perfectly ok but my pregnancy was really ruff with
my daughter so...
God I am so glad I'm on longer pregnant. |

I told people around 2-3 months. And, as far as caffeine, I didn't abuse it but I still drank it like I normally would. But, only from soda. I don't
even see how caffeine can hurt a baby. My daughter turned out 100% fine.

I told people right away this time because I had just lost my son and I wanted everyone to have something to hope for. But I think you should wait 2-3 months
because I had a few friends tell everyone recently and they lossed the baby.
I drink 1-2 sodas a day because I was already pretty much addicted to them. I
did the triple screen blood test to test for those kinds of abnormalities at about 17 weeks and then they can do the amnio if it comes back positive.
