Is Craigslist the way to go? Do you usually have to make a decision right when you see the apartment?

I used a broker because I was pressed for time. I also live in Astoria (but looked in Manhattan as well). I had a few days to decide, but knew which one I
wanted right away and jumped on it.

Craigslist is not usually a scam. I found my apartment in Manhattan on Craigslist. You do have to be prepared to make a decision pretty much right away though.
We lost out on a lot of apartments because people had already handed over all of their applications and credit check info as soon as they looked at the places.
If you're willing to pay brokers fees then going through a broker is definitely easier than Craigslist. |

My best friend found an apartment in Manhattan with an awesome roommate on Craigslist. I'm actually jealous of how lucky she got in both her house and her
roommate.

Craigslist is a scam a lot of the time. You call the people, you set up a time to meet.. the day comes, and they suddenly don't answer your calls, call
you back, or meet you. It's really annoying. Once you find a broker, though, ask them to show you lots of apts. That has worked out pretty well for me
so far.
