I realized that standards are set by the state, what I'm asking is, people are suggesting basing pay on student gain throughout the year, and I was curious
what standards they thought the gain should be based off of.

Out of curiousity, how many people in this post are actually teachers?

I hate merit pay systems in general. They tried to do one with some other public vocation and IT DOES NOT WORK.

you mean at what rate students learn/satisfy the state mandated standards?
right now it's called AYP. |

I believe that the national gov. has their own education standards too.
I agree that it is BS. I work with kids like herecomestrouble, who don't give a crap and are below grade level. I don't really see any other to base the bonus money but by standardized tests. |

How many teachers have worked in private businesses over a long term? I'm always interested to know what their opinions are the way a business is run vs.
the way a school is run.

our diocese uses the MAP tests for reading, language, and math K-12 in conjunction with state assessments (measured @ grades 3,5,7,9,11) in reading, writing,
math & science.

I've disagreed with him on this from the get-go. It was one of the several reasons I didn't support him in the primaries. However, I'm not too
concerned about it right now as I don't think it will ever pass (there's just too many against him on this), or if it does pass, it'll be a small
test project in a certain school district or something.
And in case this hasn't been mentioned, for whatever it's worth, the National Education Association is against merit pay. |

i guess it's just *impossible* to apply an accountability, right?
we're at the 2012 level expected for AYP. there's time to work out the kinks while our Commander in Chief pioneers for more thorough academic measurement. |

I'm nearly a teacher. I have the knowledge, now I'm getting the practice.
If it's based on the same standards as AYP, then I will never make great money because special education students, by definition, will not be meeting grade-level standards. That's what pisses me off about NCLB, and what would piss me off about this. |

"He also suggested longer school days - and years - to help America's children compete in the world"
http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iT--F725ypsNTaNrulnuCGd8vt0QD96RERO80 I wonder how that's going to work as almost every single district in the area I live in is CUTTING school days from the year - one district is having a 2 week spring break and another one is cutting 6 days from the school year JUST this year and most are thinking of going to 4 day school weeks next year.

what is the argument here? it's not impossible to measure every subject. is it desirable or necessary to measure every subject? if the President puts a
schedule for merit pay into practice, every subject will have to be measured, measuring every teacher. *Yes We Can*
we both know, though, that reading, writing, and math are core subjects and are valid measurements for AYP. |

you mean at what rate students learn/satisfy the state mandated standards?what's confusing about that? the data can be broken down, by student, with the student being attributed to a teacher. it's not comprehensive and i didn't suggest it is. AYP is the rate at which students satisfy state standards -in reading, writing, math & science. |
