Find a place that you really want to visit and study the language as if you're preparing to go there.

I'm fluent in English and my Spanish is pretty good. I'd like to think my Arabic is good, and I really wish that livemocha.com was a good place to
learn Arabic.
Rosetta Stone is SO expensive. I have study books and books/magazines in Arabic but it's one of those languages I wish I had someone to
speak it with. |

I'm completely fluent in French and 80% fluent in Italian depending on the day. I wish I practiced it more...I've lost a lot of it over the years. I
took Spanish in high school and spent a month with a host family in Costa Rica so I became really good at it but I think my Italian suffered since they're
so close!

I am fluent in Hindko, but that is a small dialect and is a bit useless to me outside of talking to the very small population that speaks it. I am fairly
proficient in Urdu/Hindi, but I need to speak it more to be fluent. I understand Punjabi and can communicate with people okay... but I don't speak it very
well
I'd love to learn Pashto, Farsi and more of Spanish! |

Why most people love Rosetta Stone? I downloaded many languages and tried a couple. Let's just say I deleted everything.

Mandarin is easier to learn than Cantonese, especially if you're non-chinese. The pronunciation is more sharp like you can almost hear all the letters
whereas Cantonese can sound like mumbling.
Mandarin also has 4 tones and Cantonese has like 16. I'm Cantonese (I understand more than I speak) and I was able to pick up Mandarin relatively quickly as well as the other non-chinese people in the class. The kids that were born in Hong Kong had a bit of trouble though. The trickiest part about Mandarin is where to place your tongue when you're trying to say certain words (namely those starting with z,c, x or s) here are the initials and consonants and how to pronounce them: Greetings in both Cantonese and Mandarin so you can tell the difference: Cantonese: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OC5bSTGTPPA Mandarin: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCPqZ9t05rQ I say you learn Hindi, it's an easy language to learn cuz some of the words are interesting so it'll help you remember. These are the following words I know how to say (spelling is off): Kuchni - nothing (kooch-knee) Nein - No (Nine) Baloo - speak (balloon minus the "n") bunder - monkey Shoob Shoob Baloo - talk nicely jeldi - fast (Jell-Dee) Haati - elephant (hot tea not hottie) Moti - fat bhai - little brother (buh-hi) Didi - sister (formal?) (D-D) ishka - love (ish-ka) |

I wish there was a quick way to learn languages. Like implanting a chip inside my head and program a bunch of languages inside it.

I'm fluent in Spanish, understand French perfectly but find it hard to speak it if I'm not using it constantly. Languages are sooo hard to keep up. I
want to start Dutch soon because I live in Belgium. I love those first few stages of learning a new languages, it's so much fun!
