What was your experience like? How did you meet people? I'm seriously thinking about it, but I'm terrified of doing it alone.

i'm thinking of moving from nj to atl by myself in a year or two. the first thing that everyone told me was to vacation there and try to really get a feel
for the city.

Yep. In 2004 I moved halfway across the country alone. I met people through work and through different groups I got involved in. It doesn't happen
immediately, but it does happen!

Last February, I moved to Minnesota from VA on my own. I have no friends or family here. It's been nice to start over, but it's hard to make friends. I
only have my coworkers and they dont know what it's like to be new somewhere.
I guess i'm going to have to try some groups or join a couple of classes. |

Oh yay! Another East Coaster in MN! What part of VA did you move from?

I've moved a few times alone... and will be doing it again soon. If you're outgoing you can meet people somewhat quickly, but real connections take
time, of course. Work is a good starting place, especially if you have co-workers up for happy hours where you can meet more people, etc...

I moved to NYC from NH. So far, I've met people though work and I joined a dodgeball team that's all people my age. I also have two friends from high
school and a close friend's brother here, so that's helped a lot.
It is definitely scary though, and I'm pretty introverted. I really had to fake it for awhile until I made a good friend at work who's a lot more social than I am. |

I didn't move alone, I had my husband and son but I couldn't wait to get a job so I could socialize. That is where my friends are from.

I moved from NY to CA and it was pretty hard. I didn't know anyone in California and had a hard time meeting people. But it was a good experience, even
though I'm moving back to NY in a few months.

Ack, I really want to do it, but I know I'm going to be incredibly homesick for my family/friends. I just don't want to live in this city anymore...
it's on such a decline and I'm so sick of the atmosphere in general. I need a change of pace. I never thought I'd even think of moving completely
by myself, but it's come down to my happiness and I'm not happy here.

I've moved lots of places on my own - Chicago, DC, NYC, VA, Vegas, and CA. I never found it to be difficult or scary. I think, though, that is due in large
part to me growing up moving around a lot (my dad was in the Army). I've usually met people through work and hobbies/activities (i.e. volunteering, dance
classes).

That's cool. How come you move around so much? What do you do for a living that allows you to travel so much?

I moved from Michigan to Chicago this summer. I haven't met a lot of people outside of work, but the fact that I spend 80% of my time outside of home at
work, that would make sense.
I've joined a few book clubs, etc, but I haven't really clicked with anyone. I don't regret my choice to move - I love my new job and I love living in Chicago. |
