I'm a first-born, but I have no idea what that's supposed to mean.

I'm a middle child and I definitely have "middle child syndrome".
After my little brother was born, I started doing strange things to get attention. I HATE sharing (even to this day), and I'm VERY independent, into books/my own head. It's not that I'm socially inept but if I had a choice between talking to someone for hours or reading a book during that time, I'd choose the latter. First-born children tend to be very Type-A. They tend to associate/socialize with adults more since those are generally who they hung around the most. The youngest children tend to take the most risks, both physically and socially. Those two statements definitely describe my siblings very well.

First born children are suppose to be more of the reserved, smart (book smart), achievers. Researchers state the reason for this is because since they are the
first born, most of their early years are spent primarily around adults as they don't have siblings around (yet) to interact with on a child type level.
Middle children are suppose to be "fucked up," lol for lack of a better phrase. They say it's because they don't have a true sense of identity since they are stuck between the first child (most times seen as the prize...you know "my first born"), and the youngest child (who is often babied). Youngest children are usually the most social, risk takers, outgoing, etc. etc. They say this is because in a general sense, the youngest in a family tends to get away with the most (since they are the baby...). They also grow up around other siblings and are not solely around adults in the early part of life, compared to the first born. Only children are suppose to be very well rounded and outoing (surprisingly)....most people tend to think the opposite. Reason for this is since only children don't have other siblings to lean on for support and grow up with, they have to make friends outside of the immediate family and are forced to be social (at school, on playgrounds, etc). Also the thing about sharing, which someone above me mentioned.

mine's messed up cuz I'm oldest - by five minutes. I think my twin is more dominant and got more of the oldest-kid syndrome stuff.

Younger sisters Cameron Diaz has one older sister. Younger sisters of sisters are driven, ambitious, and creative dynamos. You're the most feminine and flirtatious of girls. Nothing can stand in your way when you have a goal. But you often get distracted by whatever crosses your path - whether it's a new career, a new man, or a new interest. And let's face it, you have many interests, more than you can handle at times! Your best match is a firstborn. When paired with another lastborn you can have lots of fun, but you may lack the organizational skills that many couples need to survive. Younger sister of brothers are magnets to men. They are great actors and take direction well. They often find that they have more men attracted to them than other girls. Your best match is an older brother of sisters. With lastborn boys you have lots of exciting adventures but are less goal-directed than other couples Got this from http://www.birthorders.com/last.html I am totally a last born, younger sister. This fits me to a tee. And my sister is verbatim a first born. |

I'm the oldest and I very much fit into that personality.
However, my brother and my husband are both middle children and they are not fucked up nor are they socially retarded. To be honest, they're the most spoiled at of all their siblings. Partly I think it was because they were both from mixed families. My brother was my step-mom's only child and the only boy in my family. My husband has a brother that is older and a sister that is younger, but his brother was 10 years older and his sister was born the year after, so he got a lot of attention. Even now his mom pays the most attention to him. It is rather annoying at times. My younger sister is definitely the most outgoing and sociable out of all of us. She's always done as she pleased and it has worked for her. |

Oldest is supposedly intellectual, natural leaders, reliable, perfectionists, strong need for approval. I would say that I am intellectual and reliable, but
the other stuff doesn't really apply.

That's definitely me, although I do HAVE to have time away from people too and can sometimes feel a bit awkward when surrounded by others, which I assume is because Ive always been used to spending time alone? Either that or I'm just wierd. |

My husband and I were just talking about sharing the other day. He, an only child, wants to share everything. I, the oldest of four, absolutely hate to share.

FYI, Adler was an absolute wiener. His birth order stuff is a joke. It's basically on par with horoscopes in my mind.
Sure, it may fit some people,
but it's wrong SO MUCH.
