I'm searching for new and different books to read that stray from the usual "New York Times Bestseller" list.
Name an interesting/unusual book you've read.

I just read Garden Spells (can't remember the author). It was really cute - kind of like the movie, Practical Magic (the book of Practical Magic was not as
good).

Fingersmith. I can't remember who it's by right now. It's definitely a page turner.

Spacecowgirl - your avatar is made of awesome. Dr Horrible ftw!!!
Anyway, back on topic... Empress by Karen Miller (though I think it might have a slightly different name in the US). It's the start of a fantasy trilogy called Godspeaker, but what's unusual about it is that the protagonist/the world she lives in aren't particularly sympathetic. It's fascinating, but it's not your run of the mill hero stuff. Though luckily the second book in the series has a different character as a main focus, otherwise it'd get a bit much to take |

Stardust or Neverwhere by Neil Gaiman. Or Coraline. Pretty much anything by Neil Gaiman is great actually, and odd, and very well-written.
Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk is one of my all-time favorites. But if you have a weak stomach, maybe don't read that. |

Most of Cormac McCarthy's books are odd. Child of God is probably the most fucked up book I've ever read, but it was still really good.
