I've written a thesis, many papers, stories, articles. This is for a job application but I don't really know what a writing sample is

I think it probably depends on the type of job. What are you applying for?

do you have any published clips from school or anywhere else? What kind of job is this?

well it's a program director job... so I guess you have to write program proposals and such. How long should a writing sample be?

Well, you aren't writing it for the application and they usually like a few samples so send whatever you have that has been published.

When I started out, I always used my published press releases and articles that were published in school newspapers. I don't think length matters, so much
as how substantial the material is.

do you think my thesis counts as published? Because what I have published is a bunch of movie reviews. I hardly think that helps my case

how long are the movie reviews? Would you say they are at least a page?

Thesis, NO! It doesn't matter the topic. They are looking at writing style. Send the movie reviews.

Thesis counts as published work, because they are by your University.
Maybe submit your abstract or introduction? For program proposals I don't know if movie reviews are good. |

yeah I'm gonna do my thesis. I wrote a program proposal for my thesis. It makes the most sense. Of course it was a 70+ page boring boring thing. So I have
to pick like three pages that maybe won't make them fall asleep.

Maybe send in two pages, the thesis as formal work and something less so, like the movie review? It's still an article and does show more writing style.

I think it's a mistake not to send your shorter works. They are not going to read you thesis and sending sections out of context are going to take away
from your writing style.
And yeah, boring! JMO though! |
