The movie was EVERYTHING i had hoped for and more. there's comedy, drama, action, and tragedy. It's really an epic. the movie is close to 3 hours but it doesn't feel like 3 hours at all. I was very afraid this movie might disappoint me since i was so looking forward to it the same way i was with Curious Case of Benjamin Button. It could've easily turned into a long boring movie, but what made it worked is Baz Luhrmann's style of storytelling. He creates a world that draws the audience into the story so you feel like you're part of these characters' journey. There's a magical element to the movie used through the little boy, some people might find it confusing, but that's really Baz's style. he heightens reality and gives you a 100 when you ask for a 10. It's told in a non tradition way and that's what makes Baz a great filmmaker. The acting was great across the board. Hugh and Nicole both gave oscar worthy performances, and the boy deserves a recognition for his breakout performance. he was amazing. Hugh Jackman, what a great performance, he's strong, yet vulnerable. Nicole's character went though a 180 transformation throughout the entire movie. the movie is really about her journey.
The movie can be broken down into 2 parts. the first would be Nicole and Hugh's love story, the second starts with when the Japanese dropped the bombs. it's kind of like Titanic, there's the love story in the first half of the movie, and then the second half is tragedy. One thing i'd point out is the fact that the war is not a big part of the movie, i originally thought most of the movie would be about them during the chaos of the war, but it's not. the main focus of the story is the relationship between Nicole and Hugh and how they are affected by all these surrounding elements. the war came later on in the story and led us to the end of the movie. i cried, i laughed, and i was in awed of the beautiful cinematographer and music.
It's a sweeping epic that i would watch again and again. I asked Baz at the end about the two other endings he shot and he was extremely nice and talked about them in great details. he said he chose this ending because it spoke to him. However, we got cut short because there was a midnight showing of Twilight waiting outside. I'm going to another screening of it on Sat and i'll ask him if he'll include the other 2 endings on the DVD.
Definitely watch it when it's out. It lived up to my very high expectations.
