Teachers - did you find your first year hard?

I have a pretty awful class, and I do know that I'm part of the problem because I was too nice in the beginning and gave them too much freedom. But they are really kicking my ass and being very disrespectful to me. Which is making me really upset, because I'm a nice person in general and I put a lot of time and effort into my classes and I want my students to do well and succeed and actually enjoy going to class - but it just seems with this class I can't do it. So I have to go in and be someone who I'm not (a nasty bitch) and I feel bad for the good students who are suffering because of the bad apples. The one good thing that I have to say is that I have a really supportive department and supportive chair who has been backing me up and letting me know that it's ok that I'm having trouble because I'm learning too. It just sucks. I thought that teaching would be easier Please tell me that someone else has felt this way too? Because I have cried about this

I do have some really awesome classes though, and some really great students, so I know that I shouldn't let one bad class ruin my entire first year. It's just easier to remember the negatives than the positives.

Nothing prepares you for your first year until you are in it. And nothing teaches you more than your first year. Every year after the first one will seem easier..even with behavior problems. The first year is very overwhelming.

I need to follow through with my actions more, that's the biggest problem because the kids give me excuses and I try to understand - when probably half of the them are lying. But I give 7:30 detentions and stuff like that. Yea, my chair has a saying - "You can't have a second year, if you don't have a first." It's just so overwhelming.
