I'm 1/4 Korean. Does that count? I'm actually going to see my grandma tomorrow (she's Korean) and I'm eating some homemade kim chi

Captainsdaughter - I know this is going to sound like a really weird question, but... How asian do you look? Like would you say you look about half asian? I
only ask because my son (who will be born in December) is going to be 1/4 asian and 3/4 white and I always wonder what he'll look like and the only thing I
have for comparison is John and Kate + 8!!

It's weird actually. My dad looks 100% Korean, and of course he's only half. My cousins ALL look asian (they're all 1/4 Korean also). My brother
and I? Not so much. My eyes do a little bit, but that's about it. My mom's genes are REALLY strong.

So I guess the genes are just totally random and we'll just have to wait and see. I will be happy regardless of how he comes out looking, I was just super curious. Thanks for answering such a weird question! |

I am half Japanese, half Scot-Irish.
I have a daughter who's 3/4 white... she has blue eyes and light brown hair. Some angles and when she smiles/laugh, you can see the Japanese in her-- otherwise she's just another white gal. It freaks my mom's family to see one of their own to have BLUE eyes-- they really can't get over it. (They're still in Japan, I still remmy my cousin being soooo scared of blonde/blue-eyed ppl when she was a child.) |

Glory Glory Hallelujah wrote: Oh, I agree most parents want the best for their child and will do whatever they can to make sure they have the proper education and extracurriculars, nothing about that is uniquely Asian. But (forgive me if I'm wrong) at least for a majority of the Koreans I know, I do know the amount of physical and mental abuse attached with making sure you are the best has been on a whole different level from other friends I grew up with that weren't Korean. Not all of the asian parents I knew were like that either, but a shocking amount was, which is enough for me to see that it is much more common practice with Koreans. It's just how they were brought up and how they bring up their own too. And if I grew up in the twilight zone of Koreans and none of this is true throughout the rest of the US, then I'm glad for them so they didn't have to go through that shit lol. |

Well, all I'm saying is that my African mama made sure to tell me whenever one of the other Nigerian kids did something great, as if my accomplishments
weren't good enough!

I'm Chinese.
You know the stereotype about Jewish moms? Yeah...well add all that to typical Asian parent traits and that would be my mom. |

Glory Glory Hallelujah wrote:I can't speak for other non-American parents of different ethnicities though I don't doubt they also have high expectations of academic achievement. But there is a uniquely Asian culture of overachievement and competition among Asian-American families. That's why stereotypes of the Asian nerd, passive obedient student, etc. exist. I live in the Bay Area and have experienced it all my life. |

In my family, graduating college is like the equivalent to graduating 8th grade. Nothing less than a Master's is acceptable. Well, OK. I guess I'm going to edit and say: they have high expectations when it comes to academics. Not like piano or anything (although my dad pushed me to do piano for 4 years
