Just got some damage reports from friends who stayed. Wind damage is minimal to my area, but the lower lying areas on the MS Gulf Coast got clobbered with up
to 10 feet of surge again.

Luckily we didn't have any major damage either. Just a few trees down in the area, a cracked 3rd floor window, a few shingles are off of the roof, and
there's a trampoline in the backyard that's not ours.

dannie9 really needs to go DIAF, or in a flood from a levee breach. Seriously, it is full of stupid, horrible comments in this post.

Should be interesting to see where Hanna and Ike go. Some initial reports have Ike hitting the Gulf of Mexico too

Hey everyone I'm still in Alabama.
My neighbors said that the big pine tree right next to my house was topped, but it fell away from the house. Other than that, there is no damage so that is good. We plan on going home tomorrow. |

That is great news, Swan! Do you know if your house has power? I know that NOLA residents aren't allowed back yet. Have you guys gotten the green light to
return?

This wasn't as bad and the company estimates that we'll have power by Saturday. However we'll probably have it sooner. And the parish is still closed, but it wasn't damaged badly and all of the roads to my house are open. And my neighbors said that there are no roadblocks so open or not I'm going home tomorrow. |

SwanGeese, great news on the lack of damage.
They are saying on the radio that they are turning back people who try to enter Orleans/St. Bernard/Plaquemines parishes right now and probably will tomorrow. Be safe! |

As long as you aren't in Orleans parish, you should be okay for returning tomorrow. Orleans will let you in as of midnight tomorrow. My friend plans on
heading back on Thursday, but it is going to be a wait and see re: electricity. He doesn't know if he has any!

I heard on WWL radio that they are letting people back in Orleans, but they would prefer people wait until midnight to return.
Anyway I'm back home and the power was on when I arrived. Great timing! |

If people are allowed to go back at midnight, does this mean NO didn't have Katrina-type damage this time?

New Orleans area seems to be fine and they are restoring power quickly, but I'm not sure about lower lying areas. Some cities, including Baton Rouge, they
are expecting it to be 4-6 weeks before power is completely restored.

New Orleans did not have Katrina-type levee-caused flooding but there is wind damage (trees, shingles, etc).
Areas from Baton Rouge, LA (which is an hour west of NOLA) southward to Houma, LA and eastward to Pascagoula, MS (two hours east of NOLA) had minor to significant wind damage, and coastal Mississippi had anywhere from 4 to 19 feet of storm surge depending on how far east of the storm the location is. I haven't heard anything about Slidell or the Northshore. |

I live on the northshore and we're fine. Power has been restored to most areas and there are grocery and gas stations open. My neighbors said that we only got like tropical force winds and the wind damage doesn't look too bad. We have a pine down in the backyard and that is the worst I've seen. I wouldn't be surprised if a few people have trees in houses. And it looks like Slidell at least along Gause Blvd. has power. Flooding, on the other hand, is a problem for some people. The bottom of my neighborhood that usually floods has chest high water. If you live along a river or in a place that usually floods then you probably have water in your house. |
