Pretty amazing, but I agree with the gross display of excess.

nature and visit places like the Barrier Reef or Mount Kilimanjaro.

So what do you get at at 7-star hotel that you don't get at a 5-star?

Here are some pics I was recently forwarded of properties on the Palm Islands. The main selling point is that all properties have the beach in their backyard.
Yeah, it's pretty to look at, but not so practical when you think about it.

top of the line service Right, but...what exactly? Gold-plated toilets? Someone to hold the tissue as you blow your nose? I'm just wondering... |

Apparently they think their oil will run out by 2060, so they decided to rapidly build up a tourist area in order for their economy to survive when all their
oil is gone. I think that was a smart move!

I wonder what it's like to live there... politically, culturally.. hmm.

how's dubai when it comes to woman clothes? Are we supposed to cover our hair at least or it's pretty much like Indonesia or Malaysia where girls can
dress whatever...

Gross. I hate this place. Showy, and excessive. When you are there you can't help but think of the people of the surrounding cities and nations who could
so benefit from all the money that this city throws around. I have had family members (from Sri Lanka) who have gone there to become maids and nanny's, one
of them had to flee from her employer who beat her profusely (simply because she was a woman and a subordinate). I know this isn't necessarily
representative of the entire city but its a fact that these people treat their workers like shit. Gahh that whole place just rubs me the wrong way!

I think its a gross display of excess. Cool architecture but at the same time it's all very tacky ..like Vegas.

I went to Dubai about 6 months ago over Christmas and it's absolutely amazing! They just keep continuing to build and build and build. Dubai kinda reminded
me of a mix between Miami and Vegas.

i watched a documentary about dubai a while ago, based around the western countries' ex-pats who live there (mostly engineers). apparently only 20% of the
population are emiratees, or natives if you will. they get free education, subsidized housing, benefits etc. then there are the skilled ex-pats, then there are
the south asian workers, this is the place they say that south asia built, south asians count for the majority of the population, yet they work for peanuts and
will never have citizen status, one ex-pat (who is canadian but of south asian descent) said how he has to wait in a restaurant for the emiratee to order first
even if he came in before him.
dubai is supposed to be an islamic state, but in order to attract tourists they can't have the strict rules, so the ex-pats get special papers from the government which allows them to buy alcohol, etc. i remember this one shot in the documentary of a woman standing in a skimpy bikini next to a woman in a burkha. i also remember reading that they won't allow tourists from israel? i'm not sure if it's true. it's definitely beautiful, all the architecture is amazing, but i don't know.. dubai confuses me lol |

I wouldn't find visiting that city. I don't like how they plan on (or are) expanding it and building stuff on the ocean.
