And claimed he was doing a background check on a neighbor of mine who apparently applied to be a police officer or whatever... When I said I didn't know
the guy he wanted my name and number so he could have record he talked to me. I gave it to him without thinking, and now I'm worried...

I'd call the neighbor to see if he actually applied, then ask him what pd and call the pd to verify.

He said what police department. I'm not even sure WHICH neighbor he was talking about... I live in a condo complex so it could've been several
people...

If he was legit, shouldn't he already know your name if he's going to be asking you questions about your neighbor? I'd call the police station and
ask them about it.

I'm pretty sure that they do go around asking neighbors of applicants.

I'm gonna feel like an a-hole calling the PD. Wish I could find out for sure some other way...

Call the police station and go see all of your neighbourgs, tell them that you are sorry and you are not being nosy but that a man came up to your door
pretending to be a cop and..... and you are a bit worried so you're asking if any of them are applying for a job there.
They will understand and answer truthfully. |

No. I was half asleep on my couch, his knock woke me up. I didn't think... until right after I closed my door, and immediately thought of how stupid
I'd just been

Don't feel like an asshole, the police station often get those kind of calls, and they will be happy to help you, better safe than sorry, don't be
embarassed or shy, if necessary, ask your neighbours first, before calling.

I am guessing he was not wearing a uniform or badge? Did he show you a badge? It sounds like a scam. I would call the police department. I have a few good
friends that are police officers and I have gotten calls from departments as part of their background checks but never had anyone come to my door as part of
the process. Sounds suspicious to me. Especially if he did not show ID (a badge) when he introduced himself to you.
