The Pulitzer Prize 2008
Feature Photography
Awarded to Preston Gannaway of the Concord (N.H.) Monitor for her intimate chronicle of a family coping with a parent's terminal illness.

Rich takes a moment to rest beside Carolynne at Concord Hospital. She was admitted in early January because of an infection in her salivary gland. (1/13/07)

During a birthday party for a family friend two weeks before she died, Carolynne's mother, Kathryn Siegle, comforts her. Carolynne said she felt depressed and just wanted to get better. (2/13/07)

Melissa braids her hair while getting ready for her state gymnastics meet as family members sit with Carolynne. As her mother got sicker, Melissa spent less time at home. Fearing that Carolynne would die that day, Rich debated but decided to let Melissa continue with her plans. (2/13/07)

Rich kisses Carolynne the moment she passes away. Her family comforted her and held her during her final moments, as she hoped for.

Exhausted from work and taking care of the kids, Rich says he just looks forward to going to bed at night. (12/8/07)

At EJ's request, Rich brings the dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets into the bathroom where EJ can see them.

Rich punishes Brian after they got into an argument while visiting Carolynne's grave. As their relationship became more and more strained and Brian got into increasingly more trouble, Rich said he knew he could not take care of all three kids. (12/8/07)

On the first day of school, the family walks EJ to Beaver Meadow Elementary School. One of Carolynne's goals was to live long enough to see EJ start kindergarten. Because she wasn't there, family members came to support him. Rich visits Brian at the end of his therapeutic wilderness program in North Carolina. As problems with Brian escalated at home, Rich decided to send him away for the summer. "There was a lot more peace in his eyes," Rich said about seeing Brian at the end of the summer. During Brian's graduation ceremony, he prepares to trust fall while Rich and field instructor Steve Austin ready to catch him. (12/9/07)

Sitting on a swing outside his new boarding school in South Carolina, Brian cries while saying goodbye to Rich. Brian told Rich he didn't want him to leave. Rich tried to assure him that a year in therapeutic boarding school would make him stronger and help him deal with grief. (12/9/07)

"Close-ups are no good as Lego people are always grinning and photos with thousands of people are no good because I don't have that much Lego.
"It doesn't actually take that much time to do, it is getting the idea that takes the time."

His next project will be a recreation of Maradona's "hand of God" goal against England in the 1986 World Cup.

^ This pic has been a debate for so long. Since Alfred Eisenstaedt (the photographer) died without identifying who it was and the image is the most reproduced images from Life Magazine, many guys claimed that they were the drunken sailor who was in the famous V-J's pic.

.Yes, the girl is actually a nurse and right after he kissed her drunkenly, she slapped him hard in the face (allegedly)

After long debate, this guy was authenticated as the guy in the pic last year, over some other guys claim:

Edit: actually, Life magazine seems not convinced that it was him either....I guess, it's really hard to authenticate who it was at this stage.

The Ashes 2005 was pretty huge.

This picture is from the Edgbaston test (2nd Test of five). I think Australia needed 2 runs to win, and England needed just one wicket. Brett Lee (Aus) batted long and hard but couldn't make it to the end as Andrew Flintoff bowled him out to win that test.

The end of the Trent Bridge game (4th test), we needed 129 to win, and we collapsed as all of our main batsman fell and were left with our bowlers doing the batting. Ashley Giles and Matthew Hoggard persevered and won the test for us.

The Oval (Final test match) Kevin Pietersen hit a winning 158, here he's congratulated by Shane Warne. We drew the match but won the Ashes.

The day we (England) won. September 12th 2005.

Little known fact about this photo is that the only reason she is posing that way (body facing away from the camera) was because at the time of the shoot, she was visibly pregnant!

"A perfect 10" - 1976 Montreal Olympics- Nadia Comaneci

Before 1976, no male or female had ever received a perfect score in any Olympic gymastic event. And then came Nadia Comaneci all 4-foot-11, 86 pounds of her.
The 14-year-old Romanian dazzled the judges in Montreal to the point where they couldn't help but give her a perfect 10. And they didn't stop there, for not only did Comaneci receive the first perfect score, she then proceeded to get six more!

Super Sonja Henie - 1936

A two-time Olympic gold medalist, Norway's Sonja Henie, just 23, was the most famous female athlete in the world at the 1936 Winter Olympics in Germany. The blond beauty revolutionized women's figure skating by wearing short skirts and performing balletic routines set to music

1980 Miracle on Ice

The U.S. team, made up of college players and long-shot pro aspirants like Eruzione and Buzz Schneider, defeated a Russian program that had dominated the Olympics since 1964. The U.S. team beat a Russian team that had seven players from the 1976 Olympic team and one player who had played in three other Olympiads.
This event inspired a movie called "Miracle" and has been mentioned as one of the greatest moment in US sports, alongside with Jesse Owen 1936 Olympics moment.

Twiggy was the world's first supermodel: a skinny kid with the face of an angel who became an icon. 'She'll last a couple of weeks', a bystander quipped in 1967 when she took New York by storm. Thirty five years on and Twiggy is still a force to be reckoned with in the fashion world.

In early 1966, Lesley Hornby found herself propelled to the heights of international fame as the world's first supermodel - Twiggy.

With her waif like figure, boyish hair cut and striking eye lashes she created an image that would epitomise an era. Twiggy became the idol for millions of teenage girls of the sixties revolution

By the age of 17, Twiggy was one of the most famous faces on the planet: her photograph was even encased in a time capsule and sent into space. By this time in the sixties, Twiggy had already become a household name across the globe, an icon whose image graced the covers of Vogue, Tatler and even her own American publication Her Mod, Mod Teen World.

During her years as a model, Twiggy posed for some of the top photographers, including Barry Lategan, Melvin Sokolsky, Richard Avendon and Bert Stern who would make three films about her extraordinary trip to the United States in 1967.

Although Twiggy officially retired from modelling in 1970 when she was cast in 'The Boy Friend' she has been involved in various modelling assignments, highlights include posing with David Bowie to create the classic shot that became the cover of his Pin Ups album. Since 2005, Twiggy has acted as the face of Marks And Spencer in their successful advertising campaigns.

Back in 1966, Lesley Hornby was about to change her name and experience her first taste of fame which all began on a January afternoon and a trip to Leonard's hair salon in Mayfair....

"I was in the salon for about seven hours and they were cutting and colouring it, it was all extremely exciting for me. He was brilliant, I went from this mouse like brown to the colour which I have kept now."

Following the hair cut, Twiggy tells of the photo shoot that was to follow.

"Well after the hair cut I got on the bus to Barry's (Lategan) and met this really sweet lovely man who was to take my photos, I mean I'd never been in front of a camera before!"

"She appeared with this short hair cut which was an extraordinary transformation in her because her face came out more prominently and she's got a beautifully modelled face, totally well proportioned and there was something very new to me because she had painted her own eyelashes below her eyes and this was something no one had been doing or had done, she sat in front of the camera and it was dazzling..."

"There are so many adjectives to describe what 'photogenic' actually is, but my photos of Twiggy show the result of that."

"I spent the afternoon photographing her, we photographed her side on, Leonard changed her hair into a curl, he put a plait down the side of her, we smoothed her hair away we just tried different ways to show this hair cut. A few days later I made prints and as usual Leonard displayed them in his salon."

Twiggy speaks about what happened after her photos were displayed in Leonard's salon...

"Leonard hung them up in his salon and Deidre McSharry of the Daily Express saw them and said "Who is this girl?" Anyway she phoned us up and we went along to her office and she wrote this big article on me which appeared in the Daily Express declaring me the new 'Face Of '66' and it all happened from there really!"

And so the Twiggy phenomenon begun.

The sixties were a time when ordinary people could do extraordinary things...!

New photos of Elvis Presley in 1972 discovered

Previously-unseen photographs of a jumpsuited Elvis Presley rocking Madison Square Garden in New York have surfaced almost 40 years after they were taken.

Rare new Elvis Presley pictures from 1972 concert in New York's Madison Square Garden discovered

The pictures were taken in 1972 but have only just come to light

George Kalinsky, the official photographer of the famed arena, captured one of the King's performances there in 1972.

He came across the photos while working on a campaign for a billboard company called "Great Moments in New York."

Now one of them, which shows The King glancing up, his outstretched arms holding the cape of his glittering jumpsuit, has gone on display as part of the campaign on a three-story billboard on top of the Virgin Megastore in Times Square.

This is probably Canada's most famous picture. The Oka Crisis was a land dispute between the Mohawk nation and the town of Oka, Quebec which began on March 11 1990, and lasted until September 26 1990. It resulted in three deaths, and would be the first of a number of violent conflicts between Indigenous people and the Canadian Government in the late 20th century.

The Last Rite - 1962
Puerto Cabello naval base, Venezuela,
4 June 1962. A soldier who has been mortally wounded by a sniper clings onto navy chaplain Luis Padillo.

Braving the streets amid sniper fire, to offer last rites to the dying, the priest encountered a wounded soldier, who pulled himself up by clinging to the priest's cassock, as bullets chewed up the concrete around them. Rondón Lovera, who had to lie flat to avoid getting shot, later said that he was unsure how he managed to take this picture.

1987 - A Mother's grief
Kuro, South Korea, 18 December 1987.
A mother pleads with the riot police after her son was arrested at a demonstration accusing the government of fraud in the presidential election.

About the image
Suau was covering the South Korean elections for Time magazine when he captured this poignant shot.

1998 - the funeral
At a funeral, relatives and friends comfort the widow of a Kosovo Liberation Army fighter who had been shot dead the previous day while on patrol.

About the image
Smith stopped off at a small village, where several Albanian men had been killed the previous day. She concentrated on the distraught widow of a well-respected fighter. It was a dark, drizzly day, which contributed to the atmosphere.

This was weather radar from the Columbia space shuttle disaster. Parts of the shuttle were found from east Texas into Louisianna.
