i can't believe a few people seriously mentioned Umbrella...
we surely can't be subjected to that Ella ella ella crap 40 years from now! i still have it on my ipod!
i think U2, RHCP, Alicia Keys, Alanis Morrisette will be seen as classics. |

I really do think "Umbrella" will be. That is such a huge, anthemic song that I can totally see people hearing it come on in a club ten years from
now and being like, OH MY GOD THIS SONG!

Truth Is, I Feel Beautiful, and Only One U by Fantasia both feel classic to me. They're part of a very small section of her music that is relatively
subdued and undated by that hood terminology she loves so much.
If You Go (Ledisi) Make Me Whole (Amel Larrieux) Can't Let Go and Pass Me Over (Anthony Hamilton) Every song on Carl Thomas's Emotional album I'm not just naming stuff I like. |

Definitely STronger by Kanye, I can see me hearing that in the car 20 years from now with my kids and they'd be like "wtf?!" and I'd be like
"That mah JAM!!!"

Not that many, but most because because people don't have the same relationship with music that they did in the past. When the Beatles, and all those classic rock bands were getting popular, there were fewer options, so almost everyone was forced to hear them and interact with the albums. But now, hundreds of different types of music are released every week, and the internet and technological advances provide us with the opportunity to make more decisions in what we hear. So while a song might be really popular in some circles, only really HUGE hits have the same global impact that other bands did in the past.I agree with this. People aren't listing songs that are both timeless (note: that doesn't mean they can't sound like they are from a specific time period) and have an extremely wide appeal for more than a minute. Most mainstream songs right now are extremely fad-ish. I'm not judging anyone, but it kind of bums me out when I see threads and responses like these. There are SO MANY amazing, insanely talented musicians/bands out there who are spewing out classics. They're just hard to find.See above. Hard-to-find music isn't making the masses swoon. |

My friend and I were talking about this the other day. We were watching Dance Crew when they were doing Michael songs and we were wondering if we were going to
have an MJ of this generation. We guessed it would be Justin and Usher.
As far as the topic goes, I guess it kind of depends on what is considered a classic. I think Michael and Madonna songs are classics, but you can definitely tell they are from a certain era. I kind of do think that Britney and Nsync/BSB/Justin songs will be "classics" in 10-20 years or so. It doesn't mean that the music was the greatest, but it certainly defines that "era" in music. But maybe I'm interpreting the question wrong. |

I think Coldplay's music will stand the test of time. Also, a lot of John Mayer's songs will become classics (especially the stuff that wasn't
released as singles). I truly believe he'll have Eric Clapton's career (minus the drugs, I hope).
And commenting on someone who mentioned Christina Aguilera; I can definitely see her song Beautiful becoming a classic. That's a timeless piece. |
