My family has been evacuated twice, but we're all severely disorganised. They grab enough clothing for about a week, their computers, pictures and whatever souvenirs we deem to be the most important (most of our life has been spent in europe, my house is a mini-museum so we have to pick and choose what means something to us), and anything that has been passed between generations. We have a briefcase that contains all important documents so it's easy to grab that as well.

When my mom woke me up today with the call asking if there was anything down there that I wanted saved, the only thing that came to my head was a black binder I keep that contains all the letters my father sent me when i was younger and he was away on the Naval ship, and the box that contains all my old journals.

In my opinion when you're evacuating, you should only take the things that first pop in your head because those are obviously the most important. Those things that you have to stare around the room for and end up thinking, "Oh yeah that too" will eventually bog you down if it gets too serious.
