I totally didn't know anything about fires til I looked out at my window and was like, "Look at the sky. It's really weird." And my roommate was like, "It's a FIRE dumbass."

WritingHarmonies-- Yeah, I'm at UCI. There's ash everywhere. I keep getting emails and each time I hope classes are cancelled, but noooo...

Where do you work, if you don't mind me asking?
You're so close! Haha.
Yeah, the air here is pretty bad. So bad that my boyfriend and his family are evacuating to Tijuana (his dad owns a development down there) cause his dad went through chemo last year and has terrible breathing problems. His dad was supposed to have surgery to remove a cancerous tumor Thursday, but it was cancelled due to the fire. They don't know what to do. |

I just wouldn't go to class...I sure the teachers will understand.
I usually go 8am-6pm on Mondays (at SDSU)...I only went to my first class and all the prof did was play the news, so I left school early. It was cancelled later today. |

Keep refreshing this map, it shows the evacuation areas:
http://www.cbs8.com/misc/fires_oct_07/maps.html I'm like 5 miles away from that area, by the big lake on the left hand side. That road by there is Bonita Road, so those of you from the area can kind of see the area. |

I was actually surprised SDSU cancelled classes for tomorrow already. They were one of the last schools to cancel classes today.

Yeah parts of Fontana are near Rancho. When I was driving home from my moms this morning, the wind was pretty bad there, but I didn't see smoke or
anything. My mom is near the Ontario one (by the dairies) and I really hope they don't evacuate. I can't get down the Cajon Pass to help.
And to the JJBers who said to suck it up - we have 75mph winds in the inland empire. I drove in them today and NEVER again! I must have seen at least 5 over turned trucks. There was a semi with the roof missing. |

I don't know who said suck it up, but I bet they've never been in Santa Ana winds before. If there was some humidity I'd say suck it up as well but
Santa Anas don't fuck around.

If I tried to go through any of the places that were high winds, i'd be turned around even though I have a midsized suv. I drove through a windstorm this
afternoon on my way to work. like i could see the ash and dust swirling on the street as i drove through it.

I have a mid sized SUV too (a Trooper) and I seriously wanted to cry and go back to my moms. I grew up in Riverside so I have always dealt with the Santa Anas
but today was bad. I remember one time when I was a little younger, I decided to "test" the strength of the wind in my Eclipse. I was in the fast
lane (on the 60) and I let go of the steering wheel...I flew right over to the slow lane and stayed there. I never tested them again.

I've already been evacuated once this morning (from Rancho Penasquitos, for those who are familiar) so I came to a family member's house that's
more west, and now it looks like we may be getting evacuated a second time... houses just to the north of us have gotten their reverse-911 calls to go ahead
and leave so we're pretty much just sitting around with our stuff waiting for the final word...
... this is nuts! It's scary that everyone's saying that this is already shaping up to be worse than 2003's Cedar Fire and it's 0% contained?! |

they've evacuated over a quarter of a million San Diegans for these fires, versus the 11,000 that went up in 2003.

Wait, what are reverse 911 calls?! 911 calls you and tells you to evacuate?

^^ yeah, basically you get a phone call that's a recording, saying to evacuate and whether it's mandatory or just highly advised, the ones we got also
tell you where the nearest available evacuation center is

I wonder if they are going to start evacuating people to the OC Fairgrounds. If they do I wonder if I could go over there and volunteer or something.

Wow. That is all so scary. I can't even imagine.
This is a dumb question, but those of you who have said you're "packing up your house/place" what exactly do you take with you? Irreplacable items like photos/decorations/clothes. Because I know that I'd totally forget what was in my house if I god forbid had to claim it on insurance stuff. Stay safe guys. |
