Posts: 26204 08/01/2012 4:49 PM	When my husband and I were looking for an apartment to live in after we got married we had the hardest time finding a place that would allow our dog, Scooby. He is a mix, we don't know the breeds for sure but he has markings similar to a rottweiler. Even when we found a place that would allow big dogs they would say "no" to our dog. We finally found a place that didn't care what kind of dog we had after calling probably 30 + apartments. Now we are finding out that most homeowners insurance providers have a similar list of "aggressive breed" dogs that are not allowed. We have lived in our new house for over a year now and just received a letter from the insurance company saying that they spotted an "aggressive breed" dog on our property. I am so annoyed. Scooby is 13 years old, he can't do stairs, it takes him forever to stand up.... I know a lot of small dogs that are WAY more likely to bite than he is. I have been told by many people that he is one of the sweetest dogs they have met. Now they want us to sign an agreement that takes away our dog liability insurance. We are trying to find another company but that is becoming a difficult task as well. How can anyone have one of the dogs on this list? So many freaking restrictions. Ugh. Its not fair.

Posts: 25084 08/01/2012 4:58 PM OMG I LOVE GLOVES SO MUCH	I have nothing scientific/fact-based to add, but I can share a personal experience. My brother has a large dog, and he's a mixed breed. He's the sweetest, smartest dog I've ever been around. He seriously has the best disposition, and it's obvious by his size and look that he's got some "aggressive dog" genes. He was a rescue though, so again, my brother isn't sure about his genetic makeup. My grandmother has a small dog, and she's fully aware of his genetic makeup. He's always been well cared for, but he has a crappy disposition. He's constantly yapping/barking at people, having fits of some sort over the weirdest stuff, and he tries to bite our faces off when we go anywhere near my grandma. Small Size =/= Lack of Aggression

Posts: 3962 08/01/2012 4:59 PM Spelt Write	Can you try to have your veterinarian submit a letter, attesting to Scooby's personality, temperament, the vet's thoughts on his possible breed(s), and most especially, outlining Scooby's age and limitations. If the insurance company has a clear understanding of the fact Scooby isn't a threat, as they're assuming he is without ever having seen him or getting any information on him, they might reconsider. It's having it in writing, in a letter from Scooby's treating vet, that they would then have to dispute or disprove. I doubt they'd spend the money or make the effort. But, the worst that can happen is that they won't reconsider. But at least you can try. Just make sure you have a conversation with the vet and ask him to outline the breed(s) that he think Scooby might be. And maybe make a note that his size/markings do NOT necessarily associate him with any specific breed. That's the equivalent of assuming a blonde caucasian is from Sweden. Or a hispanic person is Mexican. That kind of uninformed/ignorant generalization. Good luck.

We should know the results in a few weeks. I am fairly positive though that he will probably end up being part rottweiler. I will definitely talk to the vet about a recommendation though. It can't hurt!

I know certain small breeds are notorious for biting. But really I don't think it should be breed based at all. If the companies are worried about aggressive dogs then it should be based on an individual assessment.

I used to live in a complex where the people across the way would leave their large dog on their small balcony all day while they were at work. It couldn't have been bigger than 4 x 6, and he was out there for hours at a time. Your older dog doesn't need the space to run around, though.

Very true, but then ALL breeds should be on the list because any breed can bite or attack. And your dog is adorable!! The coloring of a Rottweiler (even if he is part Rottie), doesn't make him aggressive. UGH! I hate people. Those were some great suggestions from FallenAngel though.

My brother has a 135 pound Rottweiler and years ago he had a neighbor that would call the cops on him when she'd see the dog outside. Which is hilarious, cause she's a big baby. She's properly trained and listens to commands. We watch her while my brother is away on business. If anyone unfamiliar comes in the house she befriends them. I finally found one who didn't care about breeds and just wanted us to get renters insurance (we were getting it anyway). I did some research and found that Farmers doesn't have an issue with "dangerous" dogs. And since we are sharing pics.... Chip Old pic but she looks the same. I need to add the new ones to my laptop.

Posts: 14955 08/01/2012 7:53 PM	A lot of apartment complexes in my area have weight limits on dogs, not necessarily breed restrictions. Unfortunately, my basset needs Overeaters Anonymous and is too chubs to meet the requirements for most places.

I will say that a rott attacked my boss and her daughter--the dog thought she was protecting the baby--and I haven't been able to look at them the same since. I don't blame them, it's my issue. I do find little "cute" dogs more aggressive than bigger dogs.

I myself deal with the same type of issue but I'm hoping when I actually move out it won't be that big of a problem, once people see him. I own a Shar-Pei and he's fairly small and adorable but he's about 60 lbs and since most people are ignorant he gets mistaken as a Pit Bull or some type of fighting dog mix.
