Who doesn't know how to swim?

Posts: 33445 06/29/2012 9:20 PM	I am 29 but I am going to sign up for lessons. When I was about 5, I was taking lessons but I had to pull out b/c of school district issues. I think swimming would be fun so I want to learn. Plus, I think my life is really stagnant now and I need to learn something new. Life is pretty boring and I don't have anything to look forward to. I think this would be a nice challenge.

Posts: 13060 06/29/2012 9:24 PM	I used to teach swim (to children and adults) and i definitely recommend learning. Not saying you need to go and become a breaststroke champion but the basics, lol.

Posts: 1005 06/29/2012 9:29 PM	Obviously it's easy for me to say because I know how BUT it's not overly complicated and really important. I think everyone should at least know how to tread water... never know when you might need it. Good for you for learning!

My parents made a deal with us though -- if we were going to have a pool, we MUST take swimming lessons before it was built. I loved swimming and we literally spent from sun up to sundown in that thing every summer. I went on to swim for the team in HS. It's a great non-contact sport for staying in shape too. Even if you never learn all the basic strokes, at least learn to tread water. It may save your life someday.

I have been thinking about lessons lately to learn how to do the butterfly and other ways, as well as learning how to dive. I was always a chicken shit when it came to diving into a pool. Which is funny because my mom was a swimmer (almost made the Olympics) and my brother was/is a swimmer.

Posts: 83784 06/29/2012 9:37 PM Funniest JJBer '04	Swimming is really relaxing and addicting. Once you get in the water you can just glide from one wall to the next and float around for hours. You think you'd get bored barely doing anything but you don't. And it's not hard to swim at all. I guess I take it for granted since I've been doing since I was 5 but it's second nature.

Except for when my brother or uncle would drag me to the middle and then grab me by my foot and pull me under. And they'd try to push me in. Knowing I couldn't swim. Oh and I was an idiot once and went down a slide at a water park and I almost drowned. I don't really like water lol.

I'm taking a beginner course with him starting on Wednesday and I'm just hoping he can start to get over his fear.

I played waterpolo and was on swim team in HS and I still have a fear of diving. I've taught friggen kids how to dive and I can't do it. For swim team I did backstroke just so I could avoid having to dive in. But it's more of a fear of my head going under my feet. I also have a fear of waterslides. Merh. /random

I grew up on an island in the middle of the Niagara River upstream from Niagara Falls. It was essential for us to learn so I carried that through to my daughter. Didn't know at the time I'd drag her to pools for the following 12 years. Swimming is great and something you can do all your life because it's so easy on the joints.

Majority of my life has been living in Manhattan and going regularly to the beach isn't really something a lot of Manhattanites do, so I've never had the need for it. And I'm not a beach person (no need to tan!) and I don't exactly have tons of friends with sailboats or something , so swimming has always been on my list of 'Would be nice to know how to do, but I don't have a need for it' list. I really would like to learn, as I agree with others who have said you never know when you will need to learn how to swim.
