I feel awful today. Sore throat, runny nose, cough, and huge tonsils. I just started a nursing job about 3 weeks ago and I feel weird about calling out sick but I did it. I don't know why but I've always felt guilty calling out sick even though in this instance it's probably not a huge deal because i'm still on orientation with another nurse so I'm not leaving them short a nurse. Also, I'm on an oncology unit with patients whose immune systems have been wiped out so it's probably not a good idea to be coughing up germs in their rooms.

Do you ever feel guilty calling out? How sick do you have to be to call out?

I've called in sick once in 7 years, and it was because I had pinched a nerve in my back and couldn't physically get out of bed. Other than that, I've always gone to work despite how I felt.

I've left work early once though. Thought I could make it through the day- definitely couldn't!

Yeah, I feel guilty for sure. When I had my permanent job at the children's hospital here, I'd drag myself in sick and I ended up not doing them any favors as they'd end up sending me home. I worked in the administrative office but they still didn't want me in spreading germs to others and not being totally productive. I think in the 6 years I was there I probably only took 10 sick days all total. Now that I'm a contractor with the government, I don't get sick leave. In my current position, in 1.5 years I've taken 1 day only because I knew there wasn't a chance in hell I could work.

I work in the medical field, if I have a fever, I have to stay home. I usually don't call off but last month I had a migraine from hell.

In the nearly 8 years I've been in my position, I've called in three times. Once was after a car accident. The second was after a surgery and had already used some vacation time and needed more time to recover. The last was because I'd broken out in hives and was out miserable and itchy for a week.

Yes. I haven't called out sick once at my current job, and I've been there over a year and a half. I came really close once when I woke up with a mini-migraine, but it went away enough for me to go in by the time I had to show up in the afternoon.

I have called out to take my animals to the vet before though. So my attendance isn't perfect.

It depends. I live an hour from my job, so I try to gauge how hard it will be for me to get home if I get any worse. Like if I wake up with a migraine, I'm not driving that far. If I'm contagious, I definitely stay home. But one time I pretty much passed out at work and tried to come back the next day (I felt fine!), but my manager wouldn't let me. I've learned they don't want you there if you're sick.

At my previous job, you had to be prepared to possibly be fired if you called in so I was absolutely terrified the 2 times I did. I had to go in with the flu at one point because that wasn't enough to stay home in their eyes. Boy, were my co-workers thrilled about that.

No, I don't feel badly. They give you sick time, I use it, that's what it's for. My work doesn't fall onto anyone else if I'm not there so it doesn't impact anyone really if I'm not there. If there's an event I have to be there regardless, unless I'm dying, but other than that, if it's just an office day, I call out when I don't feel well, and sometimes when I just don't feel like being there.

It doesn't "take a lot", it just takes me being sick. If they want me to go to work sick, then they shouldn't give me paid sick leave.

Same here. I get five days a year, I generally use them all. There's been a few 'mental health' days in those, but usually I'm legit sick. They want us to use them, and *I* want people to use them. Last month almost my entire department of 7 people got the same really bad bug. My cubemate was sick for two-three days and came in before I started feeling sick, then we both ended up being out on the same day (she had a much worse case of it). If she had stayed home during the beginning when she was probably more contagious, maybe I wouldn't have caught it!

Thank you. I was starting to wonder if I was a terrible person with all these people saying they never call out.

If I'm physically unable to move, I'll call in. If I have a cold, I dose up on meds and go in. If I'm contagious, I call my boss first and see what she says.

It takes a lot for me to call in, but that's because I have the luxury of being able to work remotely/from home if I need to. It gives me a compromise for times when it's only because I'm contagious or I just need to be a bit more comfortable than I would be in the office

I save call ins for when I'm just too gone to function. I don't feel guilty if I have to though because I'm no good to anybody if I'm that sick

I have to be pretty under the weather to call out, but my job often doesn't require that I deal with people face-to-face. If I was a nurse, I definitely wouldn't be trying to go in sick.

I honestly don't call in sick, ever. I get 20 days a year but just work from home if I'm too sick to go into the office. I get kind of pissed when people come in hacking and sick. We all have laptops and there is no reason to come in and pollute the entire office.

A lot of the time I haven't really had the luxury of calling in because I needed money to pay rent and didn't always have an understanding employer or sick time. I am jealous of everyone here that can call in every time they feel sick ha ha. It is easier for me now, Thank God.
