The education in this country is subpar and so many children are falling behind because of it. I work as a part time tutor and I can't even tell you how many students I have that are below where they need to be at their grade level. The focus is placed on testing and there is so much pressure on teachers who don't get paid enough, don't have the money for materials, and have beyond the volume of students to teach than should be acceptable. In a classroom of 40:1 no one wins because the ability of teachers to really cater to the needs of individual students is further dashed. This isn't college ffs. It sickens me every time I hear that there will be a cut in funding to education and teachers. Politicians like Romney are blubbering idiots if they think the education sector is just fine. Who the hell do they think will be running this country when they're back in diapers?

And if we did not sentence non-violent drug offenders to lengthy prison terms then we would need a lot fewer prison guards. The building codes and the quality of construction has led to many fewer fires than there used to be. Maybe we do not need as many fire fighters because there are fewer fires. School boards have more employees per student than they did thirty years ago. has the quality of education increased with more people working in the system?

However, where I live, our news has been broadcasting one to two fires a day for months now. Homes and buildings. Our firefighters are hard at work all the time.

There aren't any positions for teachers because they keep cutting things like art or music. There are teachers who teach more than one type of class (ie: Math and P.E.) because they're not hiring any more because they don't want to pay them. It's such a shame. The teachers are over-worked and under paid. Which, unfortunately, leads to some teachers really not giving a damn if their students learn or not. This is the truth. We need more funding in the public schools. I don't understand why they even consider cutting funding on public education. It should be one of the top, if not the top priority.

I wouldn't say private schools are worse than public, it's quite the opposite. At least with religious private schools. For example, I was ahead at my high school when I went to public school because I had already taken the public school equivalent of 9th grade science in 8th grade. Everyone that went to private school seemed to come out ahead. They were more prepared for college and did better and have better jobs today. Private schools also have smaller class size, so the kids get individual attention they need and deserve.
