Anyone have any experience with bipolar disorder?

Posts: 2844 05/01/2012 9:17 AM	I was recently diagnosed and am pretty stable now. However, I'm on three medications, and am wondering what other people have done to help their illness. Being on this many medications for life makes me really uneasy, but I definitely think they help me. Have any of you had any experience with bipolar disorder? What did you/the person you knew do to manage their disease?

Posts: 768 05/01/2012 9:21 AM	My sister has it. Basically all I have to say is stay on your medicine, even if you think you are doing better and don't need it. It's when you get off because you think you are doing better that you will have bad episodes. My sister does that all the time. She'll be doing so well then decides she doesn't need to take her medicine then the next think you know she's having a super super bad episode. So stay strong, and keep up with the medicine especially if it is working.

Posts: 15567 05/01/2012 9:26 AM	My boss and good friend has it and has been on all kinds of cocktails. I know she was on Lithium at some point, and Klonopin, among other things (she also had trouble sleeping because of it). She goes to a psychiatrist once a month or so for just an update and they have tried all kinds of meds. She's been on them for about 5 years and they are very helpful, especially coming from someone who knows her and has seen the changes in her. At first she was ashamed/embarrassed, but now she fully embraces is because she sees such a difference. I mean, she still has ups and downs and what medora said, keep up with the meds.

Posts: 23708 05/01/2012 9:30 AM	My uncle has it and like Medora said about her sister, he suddenly thinks he is "cured" and goes off his meds and then goes off the deep end. He's ended up being suicidal at times and another time, when my cousin was cruel to him in the hospital when her mother (his sister) was dying, he took off and walked alone for hours and hours and no one could find him. Scary times. The cousin was a bitch to tell him to "Make it snappy!" when he asked to see his sister, but turns out she has NPD and now no one in the family has anything to do with her including her 3 brothers and her father.

Posts: 5513 05/01/2012 9:39 AM	My cousin's wife has it. She doesn't take her meds properly and treats her husband like crap. She quit paying the bills and they lost their house because of it. As people said before, please make sure you take and stay on your medications. It's a difficult road surround yourself with good people.

I know it sucks having to stay on meds for the rest of your life but it's better than the drastic consequences. And keep in mind that med changes are par for the course. You almost certainly will find times where your current meds aren't working as well and will need to be adjusted or completely changed. You may try therapy too. I have a somewhat difficult time understanding how it helps since, in an episode, you may not be rational enough to get anything from the therapy, but people do say it helps.

I have regular check ups with my psychiatrist, but I'm no longer in therapy. I was in therapy for a loooong time when I was a teenager, due to my eating disorder and my parents' divorce. I don't know if therapy would help me at this point. Also, I don't get mood swings any longer, however I just feel this sedated feeling all the time and I'm wondering if it's my meds. That's why I'm hesitant to take the them rest of my life. Don't get me wrong, I'm NOT going to stop taking my meds all of a sudden, and I'll talk to my psychiatrist about any changes, but I just wanted advice from others, you know? Thanks for the advice.

Posts: 28090 05/01/2012 11:03 AM Mentalist Melts at 32°F	Btw, I was dx'd with traumatic brain injury and bipolar (chance of being one in the same) 6 years ago. I was a hard one to peg so it took until I was 38 to get a diagnosis.
