I guess some of us would just hope that at least one of the adults who were aware of what was happening would go straight to the police.

Schools like this are afraid to report NCAA violations, why would they report a sexual assalt of a minor by an assistant coach of their top sports program, that brings in $$$$$$$$ through television broadcasts, licensing, appearal, etc.??? The damage that would have done to admissions, enrollment, and endowment/fundraising would have been horrendous. No shit they didn't report this. Anyone that thinks PSU, or any Division I school, is about caring faculty and student spirt, is drinking some serious Kool-Aid LOL. can you hear the wind blow and did you know? Your stairway lies on the whispering wind
bigley22 wrote:They both knew. According to an article I read, in 2002 a graduate assistant walked in on Sandusky sexually assaulting a 10 yr. old in the showers of the locker room and reported it to Joe Paterno. Joe then had him tell Tim Curly and Gary Schultz. They simply banned Sandusky from bringing kids into the locker room and never reported it to the police. None of them did. Here's the article from the Pennsylvania Attorney General: http://www.attorneygeneral.gov/press.aspx?id=6270

This isn't tshirts or tattoos or breaking NCAA violations, this is rape of child. It is a crime of such nature where one liked to have hope in fellow human beings that for the most part, that is an act that they would report to police because of how heinous it is, no matter the money. How Penn State officials have (the A.D covering it up, and anyone along the lines who knew no legal action was being taken and stood silent, which includes the grad student witness) handled this and continue to (Spanier standing by our AD) is completely reprehensible because of the nature of the crime. They all let a child molester walk free to continue to prey upon children. Come Monday morning I'm sending some serious emails through the alumni channels asking for pressure to both the President and AD for resignation.

I read the grand jury papers yesterday on my plane and from what the grand jury found, Paterno did what he was supposed to do. Graduate assistant went to Paterno immediately and Paterno went to his direct report,Curley, who said hed take care of it all. And all he did was end up taking locker room keys away. Paterno is a prosecution witness.

Paterno is a prosecution witness. Paterno may have done what he was "supposed" to do initially but he could have done far more. He has plenty of power at that university. He could have demanded they call the police, find out who the kid was that got raped in the shower and made sure he got some help, etc. The athletic director and President of the university would have listened to him. Then maybe it wouldn't have been swept under the rug and essentially ignored.

And yeah, that grad student who witnessed it...I would have been running into the room and yelling for Sandusky to stop, not just backing out of the room and calling my dad. Everyone involved needs to be held accountable to the fullest extent possible. Everyone involved failed to protect these boys. I am glad you'll be contacting the people you know to call for those resignations. It will be interesting to see what kind of civil suits might come from this, as well.

MissDivaDoll wrote: multiplescreennamesfreak has a point though. Yes, I think we all expect adults who knew about something of this magnitude to be human enough to report it because that's what good people do. But msnf is right. This is an organization that has a lot riding on it in terms of money. The games, enrollment, endowments etc. If our current political climate has taught me nothing, it at least shows us that in this country, most people with money, power and status will do whatever they have to do to protect their money/power/status first and people second. Call that pessimistic (and I'm an idealist) but it's true. There's no way they were going to expose this kind of thing within their own community and risk losing all of this, at least not without a good game plan on how to deal with the backlash first. Look at Tressel, a man that I respected and am very disappointed in. He didn't report their NCAA violations for the same reasons (money) and all those dumb fucks did was get free tattoos and sell their shit. This school was helping to cover up child molestation and rape for god's sake. I definitely wouldn't expect them to roll over and tell the entire country what's going on inside their own program. Is it what they should have done? You're damn right. Am I surprised they didn't? Not one bit.
