It seems like her lawyer took a gamble and figured that a "jury of her peers" would never convict her or come up with such a crazy penalty amount. I guess he gambled wrong. I can't see how any lawyer with sense would advise their client to go to trial in a case like this unless they had some really solid proof that she wasn't sharing the files.

The majority of artists releasing material aren't getting any profit from it because not many people are even interested in the music that's out there. No interest = no money. You can't bank in the music industry anymore. If that wasn't the case, I highly doubt the RIAA would even be pursuing a case like this.

So basically, the $1.92 mil is just a scare tactic and they are just "making an example" out of her. But they have (or ever had) any expectations that she was able to pay that amount. I think someone said, $2000? RIAA is trying to seem like they are so great by "settling" for a smaller fine, and at the same time, they are trying to "Hey! DON'T MESS WITH US! or you'll be sorry!"
