They all know the risks, but it doesn't mean it doesn't hurt the family, crew, friends and fans when it happens.

Yes, dying is a risk they take when driving race cars. That doesn't make it any easier on his sons, his wife, his father - who was at the track - his crew members, his family, his fans, his fellow race car drivers...need I go on?

I honestly feel like that when people give these flippant responses of "So tragic. He was going 300mpg. " or "So? He knew what he was doing." haven't lost someone. Loss...

The car exploded after the initial impact. Was it the fire that killed him?

When you get into professional racing there are tons of safety regulations to address fire. The drivers have to wear flame resistant...

The tracks need to upgrade. The cars are only going to get faster.

Did anyone see qualifying last night? It was really sad. Scott was supposed to race Robert Hight. All of Scotts crew, and a lot of team mates and their crews walked up on the starting line while Robert staged. When the tree went green, Robert idled down the track. It was really sad.

Scott Kalitta was a great man. I've met him several times. This is the 2nd death in the NHRA in the last year . Hopefully NHRA will take the iniative to try to do something to make them more safe. My parents watched Scott race years ago in NJ when he was just starting out. My Dad did amateur drag racing so I grew up on this stuff. Fires are almost typical and drivers survive them all the time. The firesuits do a great job of protecting them form the flames for the most part. I'd put money on it it was the impact that lead to his passing.

Their cars catch on fire quite a bit and the drivers only get minor burns most of the time.

Drivers do survive the flames. Its the crash that probably did it.

He was only 46 and had two sons. Stuff like this always makes me re-think my love for car racing because racing is a very tight-knit community, even with fans. I follow NHRA a little because of Ashley Force, but I know what its like to have your favorite race car driver pass.
